It might not have a lot of sex appeal, but a square basket is one of those items you can use anywhere in the home. (And despite its country-style reputation, the plain wicker basket can be modern...Alvar Aalto was a fan.) We've used our square basket to hold hand towels, winter scarves, and magazines. I use small ones to hold spools of thread.
I like wicker--but I do put those fuzzy peel and stick protectors on the bottom of them if I'm using them on the wood floor.

I have a few baskets in my landing-strip bookcase. The small bathroom is off the entryway and this makes a perfect place to store towels and washcloths.
Another works to hide cables for recharging devices so the overly curious cat cannot have a shocking good time.
