It might not have a lot of sex appeal, but a square basket is one of those items you can use anywhere in the home. (And despite its country-style reputation, the plain wicker basket can be modern...Alvar Aalto was a fan.) We've used our square basket to hold hand towels, winter scarves, and magazines. Right now it's serving as our portable home office, where we keep all our notes and binders in one place. For all eight uses (complete with photos) click below.

One of the most common uses...storage for magazines. Shown: Twist Weave Storage Tote from Crate & Barrel, $19.95.

Store towels and washcloths in the bathroom. Shown: Woven Wood Storage Bin from West Elm, $24.

Store extra blankets and pillows under the bed. Shown: Woven Wood Floor Bin from West Elm, $39. (Also shown in top photo.)

Use it as a catch-all for scarves, mittens, hats, and jackets. Shown: Monday Basket from Maine Cottage, $150.

In the kitchen, use square baskets to store food or cookware. Image via Coastal Living.

Use a large square basket for laundry. Shown: Laundry Basket Liner from Restoration Hardware, $9.99.

Organize toys in a child's room. The open storage lets them put away their things quickly and easily. Shown: Oversized Willow Tote from Cost Plus World Market, $29.99 - $39.99.

Use it to store DVDs, CDs, and other media collections. Shown: Open Weave Storage Baskets from CB2, $14.95 - $19.95.
Does anyone know who makes the bedding in the first picture? Thanks!

I use small ones to hold spools of thread.
I like wicker--but I do put those fuzzy peel and stick protectors on the bottom of them if I'm using them on the wood floor.

I have a few baskets in my landing-strip bookcase. The small bathroom is off the entryway and this makes a perfect place to store towels and washcloths.
Another works to hide cables for recharging devices so the overly curious cat cannot have a shocking good time.
