A Communal Artists' Studio in New Orleans

American Craft Magazine 06/07.2008

Like many people in New Orleans, glass artist Laurel Porcari lost her foothold after Katrina. As someone who made a living crafting architectural glass and teaching at a university, the immediate post-Katrina economy couldn't support her. She made it a priority to rebuild the glass arts community, working with emergency relief funds to establish a communal space where artists who had lost their studios could come and work...

Glass making is an expensive craft, and recovering their losses after the hurricane was a struggle for local artists. In response, the nonprofit New Orleans Creative Glass Institute was founded to offer a space where artists could use a pool of communal resources.

Inside this industrial, loft-like space, Laurel and her colleagues are slowly rebuilding the New Orleans glass arts community through teaching, training, and collaboration. I clicked around in those links, hoping for a view of the results...since I don't know what all those machines and things are. Looks like there are a few good images there at American Craft Magazine. I especially liked image 7/16, the bottom right portion, that looks like a wave.

The NOGCI site is under construction.

But, I found this neat site to look at, and was quite fond of the miniatures that are raffled off:
http://craftemergency.org/events/collection/

It says:
"Since 1998, CERF’s Collection of Miniatures has been an incredibly popular fundraising event. The ten collections that CERF has assembled have been comprised of 24 or 25 miniature objects covering all media. The pieces are created and donated by top artists who agree to work within the size specifications and theme of the collection. Funds are raised through the sale of raffle tickets and the winning ticket is drawn at SOFA Chicago every fall."

Maybe AT-Chicago could cover the drawing?

And maybe feature whatever the collection of miniatures will be for this year somewhere on the site? With the raffle ticket info too.

That link above also asks for ideas, on what would make for a good collection inspiration. So if you wanted to do a feature on that site, you could also provide that info.
