Blogging ReadyMade: Oct/Nov '07

101707readymadecover.jpgThe latest ReadyMade issue is all about MOD. At least that's what the cover says. Inside, we found an array of lovely and/or zany ideas and conundrums - not necessarily in the mod camp. Below are some of our favorites:

Inside Edition, Jen Bekman's 20x200.com affordable art site, p. 15: "It's art for everyone. New original additions weekly, at ridiculously affordable prices."

A Perfect Pour, p.22: "With bottled water in the doghouse, it's time to find a flawless filter. I tested the following options using the nastiest tap varietal I could find, courtesy of my parents' hometown..." by Jenny Fuss.

Walk the Talk, p.26: Sustainable flooring options beyond bamboo.

Light Source, p. 34: How to wire a lamp.

Bright Lights, Big Style, p. 41: "Turn your tired torchiere into a mod lamp."

Technical Assistance, p. 68: Gina Trapani, the editor of Lifehacker (a site with "tips and downloads for getting things done"), lists tech tricks and bookmarks to make your days a little less chaotic.

Ugh, it didn't hit me until I stared at the cover, but Readymade wants to be like a hipster *Wallpaper (or however that magazine is punctuated).

Every project in this issue (and for some reason I continue to buy it every other month) is either ugly or lame or ugly and lame. It's sad. Todd Oldham's column in this issue is guilty of both. The coffee table project is horrendous and the "light sculpture," made of some old rickety piece of industrial equipment, is mind-boggling.

What really gets me and makes me wonder how it continues to thrive is the photography. It’s always on the edge of amateur (with a few exceptions, I’m sure). The 2 page spread on water filters is so horribly under lit and mucky that I cannot believe someone was paid for it.

The homes featured in the magazine are usually poorly shot and composed as well. Readers and contributors of this website do a stellar job of photographing their home. Why can’t a national publication?
