071108-elephantpoocrop.jpgThere is limit to what we as individuals will do when it comes to being "green" and "eco-friendly." Sure the recyclables get sorted and the same canvas/nylon bag is used for each trip to the grocery store. Dual Flush toilets have been installed inside, while likewise, rain barrels have gone up outside. But there are certain things that the average person is ok with someone else doing. In this case... it's recycling elephant poo and turning it into useable products! Click through the jump to see what we've stepped in (come on, the blog is about poo... the joke had to be made sometime.)....

Taken from the company website the Elephant Poo Poo Paper Company live by this purpose:

"Our purpose is to successfully sell our goods in order to complete a truly creative sustainable cycle:
where raw materials with little other use are utilized to make a useful and functional product all the while providing jobs and opportunity along the way and ultimately selling our goods at a profit from which a portion is directed to a worthwhile cause: elephant welfare and conservation.

They have many items in their "Poo-tique" to pick up. Everything from journals and noteboxes to stationary and sets of their products.

In case you would like further information on the transformation of dung into paper products, you might also check out these links to sheep poo products as well as kangaroo poo (aka roo poo) products (best not to Google that one).

This isn't the only Elephant Dung paper making company. There is one...I forget the name, but you can buy paintings painted on elephant dung paper by an elephant and the money helps the organization. A lot of these companies help elephants that are orphaned after their circus life. :(
I love elephants...the paintings aren't cheap..around $300, but they are super cute and I think you get info and a photo of the elephant painting it when you buy one. I think it's a great way to help the elephants, the organization, and a great conversation piece.

here is some funny trivia: 200-250 kg of food/day translates to 50kg of elephant dung/day. 50 kg is enough to make 115 sheets of paper

Here is a link to examples of elephant paintings:

Most of their poo consists of undigested plant fibers, so basically pulp churned out organically.
