Okay, the visual solutions I'm getting are:
1. Install a humungulous plexiglass thingy to shield your bed, provided that's actually an option for you
2. Lighter really is better, so if you don't have big windows, you're pretty much SOL
3. Use precious open shelf space to display random pretty things instead of anything necessary but less good looking
4. Keep everything spotlessly clean and wrinkle-free
5. Eliminate all needless posessions, including laundry, cookware, childrens' toys and electronics
Sorry, I'm just grumpy again. They are lovely spaces, I just can't imagine anyone's real home looking like this.

if you go into the mag slide show, you'll find out the table is from deboers.
and i think it's just a poorly chosen set of photos from the original set. there is one or two that have dark walls and ceilings, though it didn't mention that painting/not painting the ceiling could lift a space up sometimes.
one photo is also quite repetitive from a house tour here and several features in other mags and here since.

I love Canadian House and Home's style, but their idea of "small space" is always laughable, with "solutions" that typically involve converting your garage, attic, or basement into a Great Room, or building a 4,000 square foot addition. (Because, of course, everyone owns his/her space and can gut renovate it, right?)
I get the feeling all the editors live in houses with yards. And they think that's "City Living."

Obviously rooms in magazines are staged for the photographers - If they showed homes in magazines with the mail on the counter, the kids toys on the floor and homework strewn across the dining room table, nobody would buy their magazines.
