Lee F. Mindel, of Shelton, Mindel & Associates, collaborated with architect Reed Morrison on the design of his own retreat in the Hamptons. The master suite’s study has a 1963 bent-plywood chair and table by Greta Jalk. (June 2007)
In his Palm Springs house, built by John Lautner in 1968, interior designer Arthur Elrod arranged the ribbon chairs, covered in stretch fabric, and curved sofas—all of which he designed—to maximize views. “We gave many New Year’s parties there,” says Harold Broderick, who was Elrod’s partner. Shelton, Mindel & Associates restored and renovated a family’s Central Park West apartment, turning two units into a unified 8,000-square-foot whole—half of which is designed to host philanthropic events. A pair of 1962 Yrjo Kukkapuro lounge chairs face a 1960 Fabricius and Kastholm desk in the study. (December 2007)
A New York couple hired Shelton, Mindel & Associates to renovate their Central Park West apartment. The family room—a space that’s open to the apartment’s 100-foot-long window wall—was given multiple areas for conversation. Arranged in front of the fireplace are Sacco beanbag chairs by Piero Gatti, Cesare Paolini and Franco Teodoro. (April 2008)
In a Carrère & Hastings-designed building in Manhattan’s Upper East Side, Sandra Nunnerley combined two apartments, creating a new 2,000-square-foot home for herself. Twelve-foot ceilings and bleached-oak floors give the living room an increased sense of spaciousness. A Billy Baldwin-style slipper chair is positioned for enjoying the fireplace. Luis Barragan conceived a compound near Mexico City in 1968 for a family and their Thoroughbred horses. Above: The horses can enter the open area of the yard through two rectangular openings in a wall that Barragan, a horse lover himself, designed to the scale of a horse’s body. (October 2003)
