apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

A Small Space : in the new Domino

2006-04-24-domino.png Two hundred square feet - even after digesting all the Smallest Coolest entries we still think that is one impressively tiny home. We're happy Domino is featuring a small apartment again in this issue.

A Domino editor's spot, this apartment is all dressed up and was decorated without fear. Lots of pattern, color, and art - it is not an exercise in minimalism. We applaud this bold approach - after all, why not?

2006-04-21-wallapt.png The basic scheme of white and black is taken to the top with the amazing paisley wallpaper from Cole and Sons. We still love it every time we see it (although that seems like everywhere these days). The furniture choices are very traditional in style - the daybed, small side by side tables, two matching side chairs, a parsons desk. Even with these classic shapes the color and pattern choices make the space gutsy. We like the teal tables with the lavender sofa. The intensely colored cut flowers and wildly patterned pillows are a happy jumble against the b&w backdrop.

2006-04-21-layout.pngWe think the golden wood floors are key to making this space welcoming - the very dark floors we see often lately could have made this room very chilly.

kind of makes me want to vomit.

I have to say..what I love about domino is also what I hate about domino.

so often they seem to revel in this "no rules, anything goes" mentality....which at times is well done and cool, and at worst looks like the bi-product of a crazy aunt Ida's knitting circle and ABC Carpet and Home.

(both seem to try way too hard, while trying to look like they didn't try at all.)

On the other hand, I love that the rooms they feature always have something a normal suburbanite would find strange or off the wall...

I can almost hear paula abdul now:
"you really took that room and made it your own"

and that the rooms don't always seems to folow uber trends, or look like Bo-cocept catalogues.

And lastly...why does it feel like -ANYONE- that does -ANYTHING- to a small space immediately gets props?

I agree with m, it makes me want to vomit, too. sometimes, Domino does something that I already have going in my house- that makes me feel great, but also like, do they have a secret camera in my house?
But, every once in a while, they feature something so horrific, it makes me almost physically ill. Like the ugly studio in LA with the tacky 70's stuff, that was the worst.

That's about as bad as it gets. The wall covering is enough to make one's head explode and... well I suppose "it's tacky" will cover it.

It's the opposite of what most people on this site seem to like, but it's very well done, energetic and fun. I just am so tired of deer heads (I hope it's fake).

i subscribe to domino and i appreciate their sensibility - it's very specific to the editors - kind of like an upper east side funky prep style. the magazine has a personality, that's how it should be, even if you hate it it's a lot more interesting than the other american house magazines out there.

I haven't received my copy of Domino for this month and yet, it's on the news stands. I thought subscribers got their copies before everyone else?

Maria, I haven't gotten mine either!

You guys I've had the same problem...getting my magazines before it hits the stands. This notion seems to be a piece of yesteryear. These mag companies feel like they're doing us enough of a favor by offering a discount and therefore we should be just satisfied with that! Sucks...but that seems to be the gist of it.

It's really scary how much I look forward to receiving my Domino in the mail.

A friend of mine is using that exact same paper in an otherwise very architectural, spare apartment remodel. Can't wait to see the end result. Maybe I can coerce him to send pics.

I love love love the crowded wall above the white desk - have been craving a wall like that for ages, but just can't decide on theme/colour and pictures. Arg! Looks delicious :)
