Our favorite thing to give and receive? Hands down...a good book. A gift to use over and over again, full of inspiration and ideas, and usually not too hard on the wallet - yup, that works for us. Here is our list of old favorites and a few new ones we've got our eye on, that we think are perfect for all of our (and your?) design fanatic friends:
Living Large in Small Spaces by Marisa Bartolucci.
Scandinavian Modern by Magnus Englund.
Home and The Way We Live in the City by Stafford Cliff
Vogue Living - Houses Gardens People by Hamish Bowles
Phaidon Design Classics - 3 Volume Set.
Midwest Modern by Amy Butler.
Paris Living Rooms by Dominique Nabokov.
The House Book (1974) by Terrence Conran.
Ancient and Modern by Cynthia Inions.
I Like You - Hospitality Under the Influence by Amy Sedaris.
The New Apartment by Montse Borras.
Simple Sewing with a French Twist by Celine Dupuy
and of course...
Apartment Therapy: The Eight Step Home Cure by Maxwell Gillingham-Ryan.

Tokyo: A Certain Style is a good book to add to this list. I especially like it because all of the rooms look lived in, as opposed to that "ready for a magazine spread" look that most design books feature.

Should it scare me that I own five of these books?

I own three of them, and I plan to order "the new apartment" soon. Living large is small spaces is my fave apartment decorating book ever.
