Marimekko: Fabrics, Fashion, Architecture

We can't believe we missed the Marimekko exhibit at IIT this summer, but think this 2003 book might serve as a good substitute. It vividly presents the history of the Marimekko Corporation:

Founded in 1951 by visionary textile designer Armi Ratia and her husband, Viljo, the Marimekko Corporation in Finland not only sparked a revolution in pattern making but also pioneered a new definition of fashion that embraced the entire home environment. This book—the first comprehensive study of Marimekko designs—presents more than one hundred examples of the exuberant Marimekko fashions and home furnishings that gave the company a definitive presence on the world design stage.

We found the book at FinnStyle for $60, then spotted it on Amazon for $37.80.

I love this book! It's been my book of the week for nearly TWO weeks already, I can't seem to remove it, I love it so much! :)

Love Marimekko!!! Had the pleasure of visiting their flagship store in Helsinki, needless to say we were in heaven!!! Too bad the dollar is weak to the Euro...

Saw the exhibit at IIT....if I had come from afar, I think I would have been very disappointed. It was relatively small....although it was glorious to see the fabrics hanginng in that wonderful Meis designed space...... and not worth a long drive. Chicago needs a source for Marimekko clothing and home accessories. Crate and Barrel does not carry enough...and there is no other source. I buy from a store on Madison in New York, but their online doesn't begin to cover what they have in their store.
