ShopSmart;) : New magazine launches today

2006-08-01-shopsmart.gif Shopping magazines are popular. Two examples of the category, Lucky and Domino, are doing well.

Launching today from the publisher of Consumer Reports is a new home, food and shopping mag called Shop Smart. Aimed at women over 30 (the audience for Consumer Reports is currently over 60% male) it will be a no-advertising quarterly.

Products will be reviewed (by the same testers at Consumer Reports) and compiled into categories. The first issue includes: white wine bargains, 11 items to make your home safer, outlet shopping, essential items of the season, washers and dryers, and countertop choices.

Available at newsstands for $4.99.

HOORAY! Something without advertising. I have SO MUCH anxiety about major purchases. It'll be great to have a resource for more than electronics, appliances and hwat not. I wonder if they'll cover fair trade/environmental aspects of the products?

But why oh why did they have to put an emoticon in the magazine's name?!?

I wasn't impressed when I saw it on the newsstand while looking for the new Blueprint (is there one?) the other day.

Poor attempt at copying the shopping mags with content that we've already read elsewhere and little depth. Consumer Reports for women? Give me a break.

I picked it up because there is a good kitchen counter quality/price breakdown. It's okay, but it's like a Cliffs Notes version of the Consumer Reports Buyer's Guide.

And aimed at women? Whatever. I always scarfed up my dad's Consumer Reports as a kid. CR's quality is variable though, in my opinion.

Saw your magazine - chose it out of the many - Liked the cover and have read it from cover to cover - thoroughly enjoyed it. Especially liked the layout and oddly enough, I liked the texture of the magazine and pages - all feel substantial.

I bought it for a friend while on a trip and another friend bought one for me to take home. We all were reading it and learning. My husband enjoyed it too. I just shared it with a neighbor who also likes it.

How can we subscribe? The lady friends were immediately interested in subscribing, but nothing fell out of our magazines. :-) Couldn't find any subscription info on the magazine information page. I'd like to give it as presents.

Thank you for this good magazine.
