According to this article (that a kind reader linked to in a post on AT:NY today) Chicago has two hotel furniture liquidators.

2006-11-08-fourseasons.bmpOne of them, Fort Pitt, is a 180,000 sq. ft. warehouse of goods from 4 and 5 star hotels.

They get furnishings from the Four Seasons in Chicago and the St. Regis and the Drake in NYC. Beds, chairs, armoires, dressers, art, mirrors, lighting and rugs are all available.

Quality constructed sofas can be found for $199. - a representative of Fort Pitt says that decorators appreciate the solid fabrication done by the makers of these basic pieces and therefore will buy them and reupholster to sell to their customers (at a markup, of course).

The prices are low - one example: a mahogany armoire from the St. Regis (retail: $6000) was priced at $399. at Fort Pitt.

It sounds like digging would be in order to find a jewel but that can be half the fun - you just never know what you might find...
