Dust Mop Slippers

20080206slippers3.jpgOh, we just don't know about this...

The Dust Mop Slipper appeals to our lazy side but is this really considered cleaning? We're not sure that shuffling down the hallway with the great dust bowl swirling up behind us makes our floors any cleaner.

Yet there are plenty of products just like this...

20080206slippers5.jpgLike the Swiffer technology these house shoes employ dust-grabbing fibers to pick up household dust. But they're not as wasteful as the disposable Swiffer cloths because the slippers are easily washable, either with the laundry or in a dishwasher (ew). They claim that the biggest benefit is that the slippers eliminate bending and stooping to pick up debris but...wouldn't a lightweight, hand-held vacuum be better?

If you want to give them a shot (or a stroll, rather), here's our Amazon round-up:

  • Plaid Dust Mop Slippers by Jobar, $4.99
  • Pink or Green Slipper Genie by Evriholder, $9.99
  • Blue Dust Mop Slippers by Get Organized, $7.98

waste of money. You would still miss all the corners, under and behind furniture, etc.

Another one of those products which at first thought, seems like a good idea... But moments later, the second thought creeps in and you realize this is just another stupid waste of an impractical item that won't really work well, and will end up in the waste can.

i wouldn't use them as my only cleaning method, but i'd definitely tell my husband to wear them around the house! you could at least get a lot of dog hair up that way...

isn't this something like what Amelie's mother uses to dust the parquet (in the movie "Amelie")?

Pippi Longstocking did something like this, except that was in a charming kids' book. In real life, it seems beyond silly.

My dad gave me a pair as a joke for Christmas and I actually got a little mad at him for it - he knows I hate novelties and that I'm trying to pare down stuff that gets into my place. It went straight into the outbox. I was just a waste of money. Dads of the world: DO NOT give this item to anyone!

When you Swiffer, you're cleaning by running the Swiff over the floor with some pressure behind it. No great bowl of dust swirls up. These would work the exact same way -- your body weight provides the pressure, and the fibers pick up (and hold) the dirt. If you want to get into corners and near baseboards, sliding around a bit would do the trick.

Y'all are fussing because this makes cleaning not nearly complicated and troublesome enough.

Devyn - I had the same reaction. At first glance, I was ready to buy. But on second glance, naah. Do I want to be walking around in gross slippers?

I would probably get these if people raved about them, because it could be a great idea. Anything to make cleaning easier and effortlessly more frequent. Anyone?

Lots of people assuming it's "silly", but nobody (including the one who had them) saying they've tried it and it doesn't work, and in what way they don't work . . . do they push dirt around, or hold it?

If only someone came up with a version that I could use to scrub the bathtub while taking a shower!

I'd say they are worth a try.

My boyfriend suggested making kids sleepers out of this and let/make them roll around on the floor!

If someone gave these to me as a gift, I definately wouldnt throw them away before trying them.

If they pick up pet hair I think they would be useful. I wouldnt wear them wandering around during the day but I could see wearing them while scrubbing the kitchen counters or wiping down the bathroom counter and sink.

art - I'm with you on that. Why don't we have handheld electric scrubbers, along the lines of electric toothbrushes? And when will we get a roomba for cleaning bathtubs? I would buy that in a second.

no one's ever accused me of being slatternly or untidy, and i've actually often thought that it would be cool to have slippers like these. sometimes sweeping and swiffering doesn't take care of everything, and it'd be nice to be able to take care of the remnants you notice simply by puttering around the house.

and i LOVE the idea of having a shower version.

okay, so i actually own a pair of these... and they are actually pretty fun!

they definitely appeal to the kid in me, who likes to go sliding across wood floors (though the package says you're not supposed to do that).

it's really just like using a swiffer, except instead of stooping over to reach under the couch, you can work your legs a bit by squatting and swishing your foot around. not the most convenient, as i do alternate between the slippers and the swiffer, but really anything to make cleaning more fun is a winner in my book.

Pixie- I've seen bathroom-cleaning versions of electric toothbrushes at Wallgreen's. You can even get a set of interchangeable scrubheads for grout, corners, etc. I haven't purchased one... yet! But it's definitely on my to-get list.

my apartment doesn't get so much dirty, I don't let anybody in wearing shoes. I don't mind if they have a hole in a sock, but this is the rule in my house most of the time.
