Fingerprint-Proof Trash Cans from Simplehuman

3-6-08simplehuman1.jpg

It's hard to keep a trash can clean, especially in the bathroom. These wastebaskets from Simplehuman have a few things going for them to keep them spotless (at least on the outside)...

1) They have all-steel pedals or sensors to open the trash can.
2) They're coated with a clear fingerprint-proof finish to avoid smudges.
3) They have a stainless steel lid to keep trash contained.
4) Each can comes with a 10-year warranty.
5) The only exception is the sensor can which comes with a 1-year warranty.

Prices range from $69.99 to $199.99, which is a lot to pay for a trash can, but they're guaranteed for 10 years. There are also smaller models without the fingerprint-proof coating available for upwards of $14.99. For more information, visit the Simplehuman website.

I just have a hard time dropping $70-200 on a trash can.

we have 2 simple human cans in our office. One is the non finger print proof, and the other is. I would call it more finger print resistant then "proof". I can still smudge our can.

The FPP one we have is the double canister butterfly door. It's OK, but i know it is one of the most expensive ones they make, and it's nice having 2 bins, we use it to separate trash and recycling, but, the bins are really small. too small for a normal household probably.

I've never heard of a garbage can that becomes trash after ten years.

I know what you mean tallguylehigh, I've tried twice and only got as far as the Bed Bath & Beyond check-out line before putting a $230-dollar simplehuman can back on the shelf.

There was just NO way...

We have the butterfly lid one. It was hard to suck up paying so much for a trash can, but couldn't find anything else we liked, so we did, and we're glad we did. We use it every single day, it seemed worth finding a great one. I've never had a kitchen trash can before that wasn't a total pain in the ass, this one is no trouble at all.

We did some research before we bought, and Target was cheapest by a long, long way (we also got money off because it was slightly dented, but that was just good luck).

They are well worth it. We have one and it does well with keeping odors in, keeping things tidy and is easy to use when your hands are full.

Definitely a member of the simplehuman fan club. They are SO worth it. I know plenty of people who have had the "other" stainless steel cans, only to have the pedal or lid break after short periods of time. The slow/quiet-closing lid, the liner that hides the bag, and the shape/size of the can really all make a big difference. My 13 gal rectangle was around $100. Worth every penny!

I just bought three of them at Bed Bath and Beyond. So far, they've held up beautifully. I love the self close mechanism on the cans. I felt a little cheated though since I forgot to bring by 20% off coupon.

Simplehuman has the best customer service ever. If you have any problems with the trashcan, give them a call. We have the softtouch in white and the little spring on the lid broke off. First they offered to replace the lid and then in turned out they don't make the white ones anymore, so they are giving me a brand new stainless steel one for free. Unbelievable.

Designsnob,

Don't feel cheated about not having a coupon! If you bring a coupon and your receipt and they will credit you the 20% in whatever method you paid. BB&B also allows you to use expired coupons, which is nice. You can also use multiple coupons on multiple purchases.

As for the trash cans, I used to work at the Container Store and the automatic can we had on display stopped working on a frequent basis... and I used to clean the "smudges" off the cans on a daily basis. I would recommend any of the cans except the automatic model.

designsnob: How could you forget the 20% off coupon? That's a major faux pas. I purchased mine at BB&B with the coupon and let me suggest they're not good for kids.

My sister's kids came to visit and my SH can is a bit wrecked. It doesn't close quietly and it no longer closes all the way.

We bought one of these right after we got married with some of our wedding money. I had hard time dropping $100 on a trash can, but then I raved about it for the next week. I absolutely fell in love with our trash can! We got the slimline one (kinda rectangular, with a rounded front), which fits just perfectly in our tiny kitchen. The lid pops open when we step on it, and then drops shut, keeping stinky smells inside. And the simplicity of the design - the rubber liner that comes out, the little spot to tuck the bag into, etc - means that I'm more than willing to take out the trash instead of making my husband do it. Love it, love it, love it!

I bought the round Simple Human trash can right before moving into my apartment. I like it, but I would advise getting a different shape - the round can fills very quickly. I would prefer one of the rectangular ones.

As far as spending so much money on a trash can - I have lived in numerous apartments with insect problems (I lived in NY for a few years, they're impossible to avoid) and this is one measure I am willing to take to prevent this from happening again.
