Laundry Day

8-27-07laundryday.jpg

Everyone has a household chore that they hate to do. Ours is laundry. We'd like to tell you we're always on top of our chores, but the truth is we've had a growing mountain of clothes in our closet that got so big that the whole "pretend it's not there" thing didn't work anymore. Our solution: Pick a laundry day and stick to it.

Here's how we finally tackled our mountain of laundry:

• We made a trip to the laundromat and washed a few loads at once. It wasn't so bad. We read a magazine and watched "Wheel of Fortune" on the laundromat TV. It was the first episode I'd seen in 10 years. Why do Pat and Vanna look exactly the same?

• We got rid of our extra hamper so that we no longer have a place to keep dirty clothes in laundry limbo.

• Thursday is now laundry day. No exceptions.

What are your most hated chores and how do you make yourself do them?

My least favorite BAR NONE is cleaning the stovetop. I have an electric range, which normally doesn't bother me (I'm not one of those gas range fanatics). But when it comes time to clean up, it's just a big pain in the arse. I put it off for as long as possible, usually until I'm having people over and it needs to be cleaned out of sheer embarassment.

I hate going to laundrymatt. I don't mind doing the laundry, I just hate going there. I wish I had a washer. Normally I airdry my clothes... and then iron. So maybe one day my dear husband will mastermind the installation of a washer in our garage...

Like anusha73 I hate going to the laundrymatt. Never understood people with a washer & dryer complaining about doing laundry, or being able to find time to do it.

laundry is the biggest pain for me. I'm on the fourth floor with no elevator, and the closest laundromat is 6 blocks away, and no, I don't have a car. I usually ignore the pile of clothes taking over my bedroom until I run out of clean bedsheets. Then I load up my little cart and pray to see a neighbor who will help me carry 4 weeks of laundry down the stairs.

I hate all cleaning chores without exception, which is why we're re-downsizing to a truly tiny apartment with big closets, hard-surface floors, and nice flat doors with no irritating plastic "colonial" detailing to catch dust. If the place is small enough, I'll be downright compulsive about keeping it clean -- but too much space activates my "slob" setting.

Laundry is torture.

I have a washer and dryer and a whole (small) laundryroom but it still piles up until I spend 2 days doing 14 loads of laundry. (See: most recent weekend)

I do this time and time again and I can't help it. I need intervention. And, don't look at my partner - it's the only chore he just flat-out refuses to do.

I agree with Sara48. Going to the laundrymat isn't fun, but having a washer and dryer and doing it at home just doesn't bother me that much.

I hate doing laundry...so I don't. I pay a service to come and get it while I am at work and a few days later it magically appears all folded in these canvas bags in my kitchen when I come home. I love them!!! They do my dry cleaning as well.

After three years of using a laundromat and washing my own dishes, I finally have my own washer/dryer and dishwasher, and I'm in heaven. I will NEVER complain about doing laundry again!

I hate too cook too, Julie, but more than that I hate cleaning. But I'm also grossed out when things start getting dirty. Hopefully soon I can start paying someone to clean for me!

I hate washing the dishes. I have 4 kids & hubby and no automatic dishwasher. It is extraordinary how many dishes 6 people can get dirty in one day....We have to rewire the house, but once that is done a dishwasher is #1 on the list!!! Either that or my kids need to grow up really really fast (can a 6 year old do the dishes?...or is that child labor?)

I recently moved into a 2-bedroom apt., where my bedroom's closet houses the washer & dryer. I think the laundry gods were looking out for me! The washer has become my hamper, and I can start a load before leaving for work.

Of course, it would be nice to have a closet for clothes...

Oh, I DESPISE doing laundry! It's the worst! I live in a high rise of 160 units. Our laundry room is in the building, so I have no complaints with that. But there are only 6 washers & dryers. The thing that annoys me the most is when I go down there and somebody is using all of the washers themselves. I know some people have a lot (although there are no big families living in my building, and virtually no children), but to hog all the machines at once just irks me no end. I get very angry!!!! Save at least one for the other guy!!

Or when somebody leaves their stuff in the washer or dryer for hours on end, forcing you to remove their items. Ugh.

Keisha - what service do you use for your laundry and what is the cost?

before i moved into my tiny house, i used to go to a laundromat that uses a card. i do my laundry maybe once or twice in a month mainly because i work nights by the time i wake up the day is gone. i live by myself so it's all mine. the actual laundry is ok, it's the folding i hate. it took me 2 years before i was able to buy a front loader washer & dryer. i still hate folding up to this time. i have to do at least once a week laundry otherwise i will end up cursing my loads when i'm folding.

i cook at least once a week. I don't like washing pots & pans because i scrub it till they shine.

i love cleaning my bathroom. i like it when the countertops are gleaming and i like method daily shower which i use after i take my showers. i make it a point to clean the bathroom after each use.

i know i'm anal.
