Collections: Sarah's Vintage Chalkware Animals

sarah1112508.jpgWe're so happy that Sarah sent in her collection! Here is what she had to say: My collection of cartoony vintage animals grew out of a love for vintage carnival chalkware, swingy jazz music, old school warner brothers cartoons, and a nostalgia for living in a rural area as a child. These pieces add warmth to my house without making things (I hope) too juvenile. Outside of chalkware, my collection also includes Mold-a-rama animals, toys, textiles, and prints. I live in a vintage studio in Chicago, which was built in the 40s, which sort of lends itself to my collection. Like other collectors, I actually have a number of collections -- I also collect McCoy pottery, blue willow transferware, and other vintage tins, dishware and cookware from the 40s and 50s, vintage textiles, PEZ dispensers (they are displayed around a framed polaroid of my brother and I in Halloween costumes, in a nook between my main living space and my bathroom), zines, and postcards that have been color corrected to the point of being unusually blue.

These things are layered into my home, just like you would layer textiles into a room. I tend to stick to certain colors, to keep everything tied together, I try to keep my house uncluttered (of like piles), and my furniture choices are either clean and modern or clean and of an arts and crafts sort of variety, which I think helps keep things from getting too visually crazy.

See the entire photo set here. Thanks, Sarah!

^ jyw, if you think these are creepy, Google some of Mark Ryden's paintings. ;^)

These remind me of the ceramic fish family on our bathroom wall (and so many other bathroom walls in mid century suburbia) when I was a kid...

Wow, mold-a-rama... I remember those things from when I was a kid and we'd visit family in L.A. and we'd go to the zoo. They had the vending machines all over the place and I remember thinking it was so cool that you could put money in and it would make a little plastic animal for you. My mom would never let me get one, though.

btoddster, I remember those fish! One of my mom's friends had those, and I think had had them for 10 years before we even knew them in 1969!
