apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Found: Obama Button Collection!

092509-obamabuttons.jpg Putting all political views aside, this collection of Obama buttons from his campaign trail, is quite a sight! Although we've been thinning out our collections lately, we still love seeing people who go all out with them! More after the jump...

Refrigerators can be a great place to display collections of things, although usually they tend to be photos and artwork stuck up with magnets. We like the themed button display because even though it's a sea of items, it all has the same theme and looks cohesive! You can see more of Marion McDowell's home and her artful collections over at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel!

Thanks Marion!

I have to wonder what the ROI is on items like these. Especially with something as historical as Obama being our first black president. Personally, the visual clutter would be too much for me!

I don't think most people are concerned about ROI with their collections. They just collect items that, in some way, inspire them or give them a positive vibe in one way or another. I have several small collections and they're not worth anything to anyone but me, but I'm okay with that.

I agree the visual clutter is a bit much, though. For some reason I have an aversion to cluttering up my fridge with magnets. My mom always had so many on her fridge and I loved looking at them, but I only have simple, round neodymium magnets on my stainless steel fridge so they all blend in...except one Obama magnet I found in Vegas that I couldn't resist because of its hillarity. :)

I just saw the rest of her house and the cluttered fridge is definitely forgiveable!

I like the button idea. But what is the cure for Obama overexposure? Enough already.

Agreed with aj, I live in NYC, I am way overexposed to Obama gear and I find most of them a bit tacky.

My favourite political button says: Will Rogers Never Met Pat Buchanan. It might be the most brilliant button ever.

But I like the idea of making them into magnets. I might do that with my collection since it is signigicantly smaller and would not look as dense.

I Agree with AJ. Enough already.

Enough with the knee-jerk Obama hate. This isn't really about Obama, it's about repurposing those pins in order to display them in a different way. I've also seen costume jewelry pins turned into magnets too.

Weariness of the never-ending "Obama fan frenzy" is not the same as "knee-jerk Obama hate".

You guys still missed the point of the post in your haste to decry "Obama fan frenzy".

Missing the point or not, Obama mania is just getting old. And lets face it, Democrat or Republican, theres not a whole lot about Obama to really get excited about anymore.

slowdown- Thank you for pointing out my omission in re the point of the post....The button idea is very cool!

They are very neatly displayed...
As for the creepiness of Obama worship...it doesn't matter what anyone says since it's all just racism anyway.

LOL The race card is ridiculously out of control, no arguing that.

Wow. A lot of Apartment Therapy readers could use a little therapy of their own.

Love the collection and the house.

Acknowledging the Obamamania automatically means we all need Therapy? Maybe you should join us at our sessions; sounds like you need a little, too.

Notice it's the same small circle of commenters decrying "Obamamania" whenever his image appears in a post? Enough already. He's the President of the U.S., he's high profile, and his election meant a lot to many underrepresented people. SO OF COURSE HE'S PART OF THE LANDSCAPE. Deal with it. Stop the obsessing and get on with your lives. Just shut the hell up already. Ten to one most people are sicker of hearing your braying than they are of seeing Obama's picture.

The Nazi-like mob of evildoers spewing racism and hate over Obama Buttons are veering dangerously close to whipping up a murderous frenzy...not unlike San Francisco in the late '70's [or Dallas in 1963]. Embrace the buttons goddammit!!!

Oh for christ sake, rosenatti. You sound like the typical, banner-waving, pshycotic far leftie who gives the rest of your party a bad name. I love how all of you liberals preach "tolerance...unity...respect" yet your tolerant of no one elses view but you own. And as far as the racism goes, you all catapult that card into every scenario that goes against your ideology. So when the Pelosi-driven San Francisco race wars break out (which they wont), you liberals have no one to blame but yourselves for the widening racial divide that Obama (to his credit) seems to be trying to put an end to and move on from. Oh yeah, and what about the voters who voted for him and support him only because he is black? Thats just as racist as any other angle. In short rosenatti, you shut the hell up.

Yikes! Are you kidding me? Why is this conversation happening on Apartment Therapy?
PLEASE find a proper outlet for your aggressions!
This is NOT it.

My final word on this subject...Obama kitsch is not so much design as political propaganda and ephemera. As such, it really has no place on this website. Any testy political conversations that are started as a result are simply the "fault" of the Apartment Therapy editors, who decide what gets posted. Apartment Therapy should be a "safe zone" from politics but since it is not, it should come as no surprise if partisan observations or discussions result from political postings.

AT editors should step up and exercise editorial discretion when politics and race get ugly here.

I love Marion McDowell's home. (the political buttons ain't set in concrete for cripes sake) It is wonderfully, tastefully African-centric. I really like the back-splash with the masks. They look like they would appear 3-D when lit with candle light. The whole space is splendid and the jeweled decorative box by her Mother is a clever way to use costume jewelry.
