The Biltmore Estate: The Country's Largest House

During our Tennessee vacation last week, we continued our roadtrip east to Asheville, North Carolina, to tour the Biltmore Estate. George W. Vanderbilt began his "counry" home in 1889 with architect Richard Morris Hunt, and it officially opened six years later. Vanderbilt used his fortune and background in the shipping and railroad industries combined with his interests and knowledge in history and architecture to create a home that stands the test of time. A few pieces of information we remember from the tour: the house has 43 bathrooms, an indoor swimming pool and bowling lanes, a glass-roofed indoor winter garden, endless tapestries, sculptures and fireplaces, and many balconies with stunning Smokey Mountain views.

you went to the biltmore! i LOVE that place! it was one of my favorite things i ever saw on a sightseeing tour. i went there when i was like 13 as a kid.

I grew up in Hendersonville, NC and adored going to the Biltmore whenever guests were in town- the spring tulips are to die for- Christmas absolutely magical! Sigh-
