We can't believe that just looking at dishes could make us feel squeamish, but it really has. The Hematolagnia place settings are definitely not for the faint of heart and we can't really imagine dining off of them, but they do make quite an impact. Jump below to see them if you can face the queasy ick-factor...you've been warned!

Available from Spring in a limited edition, the handmade ceramic plates by Nadeige Choplet range in price from $60. to 135., depending on size.

They are part of a full "Dexter" collection, put together originally for the Met Home Showtime House last fall. It includes these chairs by Amy Lau Design, dismembered flatware and more. See the whole collection at Spring.
This is just weird in not a cool way..But I love Dexter one of my new found favorite rentals.

wow, those look quite realistic. I mean I have never seen actual human blood on a plate but it looks quite convincing. creepy

I don't care for the idea of furniture and dishes with blood spatter.
I realize this is someone's "art", but I'm not interested.
view creolesugar's profile
That is truly SICK!
view suzy8track's profile
The fact that these things were made by someone at all shows how desensitized we have become to gore and the evidence of human suffering. This is really sick.

I don't recall Dexter actually eating anyone...
And I can't think of one person I know who would be happy to eat dinner off of a blood splatter plate. In fact, I'm pretty sure that whipping out those plates at a dinner party would kill whatever witty conversation was taking place, regardless of the amount of wine already consumed That said, if the glazes were in black, or blue, as ink splatter I'd buy them in a heart-beat.
view scarletdog's profile
These would be great conversation pieces! They would look great with my white and red theme.
Maybe you could add the recently featured pool-of-blood pillow to the chair.

I have a fondness for blood spatter (and Dexter, but that's beside the point), but even I wouldn't eat off those plates! I might keep them around to pull out in order to gross out and amuse some of my friends, though. ;)
The chair though, is awesome. My roommates and I could design some great practical jokes to go with that chair.

oh no...
the bottom left one, as a charger, doesn't bother me too much. it just looks like marbled red ink. but the top left... eww. it looks exactly like the blood in the package your steak came in. not appetizing.
view foodefafa's profile
That's just lame. The plates look more dirty than they do bloody. Why can't the Dexter folks just make t-shirts and ball caps?
view PrettyKitty's profile
I can only imagine cleaning them after eating something red.

Those plates would be pretty in that wabi-sabi kind of way, if they were ANY OTHER COLOR. Icky.

here's the problem. murder is not just something that happens on a tv show w/ an extremely sexy man. it's in real life. real people, people who are loved, who are people's children or lovers, real people are shot, stabbed, chopped up, & yeah, some get eaten. it's not funny.
i'm not being a kill joy here, but have we really become this desensitized to evil?
what's next skin lamps & soaps?

I don't really get this as Dexter merchandise. Dexter is so fastidious; I can't really see this appealing to him on any level. However, if this had been a PETA initiative, I would be very impressed.
view kaylia's profile
Exactly, Kaylia! This is such a bad take on kitsch. I am embarrassed for anyone who actually shells out the money for this. I think it means they have way too much money. As far as the plates go, why would anyone want to eat on a plate that looks that dirty.
view mamaspank's profile
I had to look up who Dexter is. I don't think these are nice dishes, but I like them a little better than the butterfly bedspread. I dunno. What on earth causes someone to need provocative bloody dishes? Or create them? I bet they get a good pat on the back, oh your so clever, bloody dish designer. I hope they post about us on AT, it's almost geekologie.
Think about not real blood on dishes compared to skeevy used mattresses that most of you seem to think is just peachy. And then take the loser of that match against the hokiest blanket on the face of the earth.

murderously dreamy...making a few warped dishes and getting this kinda ink is just thumbs way up

Good and/or interesting design ranges a spectrum from completely practical to completely aesthetic. This entry somehow manages to fall far from both.

view ryttu3k's profile
I love the idea, and it definitely wouldn't kill the conversation amongst my friends... it would start a string of jokes that could last hours!
That doesn't mean we're killers or that we don't understand the horror of having someone you love taken from you. It's just silly in a Halloweeen costume kind of way. BUT I would never pay that price for Halloween decor, I'm sorry.
Oh and the post name... Dexter for dinner... mmmm...

I don't know who Dexter is but the dishes look sickening.
view hrhprincessfiona's profile
I'm not easily grossed out but.... ew. The chair doesn't bother me at all... a bit weird...but whatever. The plates though? I'd feel like my food was under-cooked and that's nasty.

i kind of like them.....gross?? yes. but so are castings of human skulls but their is an underlying beauty in them, and you could go to many online and brick stores to purchase them or variations of....

I expected them to be more gross. Disappointed.
Also this is all about context. Call it a Pollock plate and people would love it.

Apparently there is a subculture in Japan based on Injury and Blood fetishes - yes, seriously. I can't remember what it's called, but I have seen some quite gruesomely gory pictures. Photographs of peoples self-mutilation (well, more injury than mutilation) exist of this blood centered group and are even creepier than these plates.
view dn's profile
These kind of terrify me, but they do look neat. I'd be more interested if it was blue or black and trying to emulate ink splatter, but it's an interesting concept.
I do love Dexter's office decor, though, as morbid as it is.
view SputnikSpak's profile
Someone just made something gross and then slapped the name Dexter on it. Dexter would never go for the plates. Now the chair, that was very Dexter.

Too boring and gimmicky. No aesthetic appeal probably perfect for teenage boys. Please don't use the name Dexter to push your own bad taste.

Yes, anyone who would buy these is a sick and twisted person with no appreciation for the sort of fine taste this blog stands for, like Keep Calm and Carry On posters.
And anyone who laughs at The Producers? Evil Nazi sympathizer, natch.

view STYLeyes's profile
can anyone tell me again why exactly we celebrate murderers and rapists? Fictional or otherwise?
how sick and twisted have we become that someone would consider making these pieces? That we watch shows like Dexter and think its cool. This makes me sick.
view Oneformybaby's profile
I'm not sure that just because you don't like it, it's "sick." I agree that these are more conversation pieces/artistic statements than they are household items. Art is always subjective. For some reason, i'm thinking of that chair a while back molding from the naked lady torso :P
They are also advertisements for the show. I don't watch the it, but i've heard good things about it. I don't think it's "celebrating" murder to tell the stories behind it anymore than The Sopranos celebrating The Mafia. In the end, it's not about the violence, it's about taking measure of the power of violence.
view Tinyvoices's profile
I think that people are overreacting. Just because you like blood doesnt mean you're condoning violience/murder.
view chusmabilly's profile

view rstrtz's profile
i wonder if people would watch dexter if it were about a smart, charming, handsome rapist, child molester, or something. my only thought is, why is committing murder in a clever way entertaining? i'm not saying anyone who likes the art or show is condoning that sort of thing. i just mean, why has our culture suddenly given the ok to show the heroes of a show kill people. it's just not very balanced. i mean, forget the plates, whatever. i'm just asking why our culture is here?
view mariegael's profile
Well, they are certainly convincing.
But yuk.
view SherryBinNH's profile
I don't think the character is meant to be seen as evil; i think he's meant to be disturbed, and i assume the show explores the difference between the two. I think the drama comes from wondering "how much longer will he only kill people who kind of deserve it and how does he feel he has the right to do so in the first place?" Don't watch it, so not sure.
Some people prefer movies/tv/books/music that challenges you to look at the world in a different way or to look at grey areas more closely. The chairs and the plates are certainly, um, challenging.
Interesting post; i think the discussion is one that more or less comes up all the time here. Not so much "what is wrong with people that they'd want to watch that," but i've certainly seen a lot of "what idiot would want a house/chair/chair like that?"
view Tinyvoices's profile
America has always celebrated brutal vigilante justice.
But somehow, when the brutality isn't masked as heroism and is instead attended by sweeping western landscapes and scenes of brooding passion, the people who watch it and enjoy it must be sick, sick, sick.

Love Dexter the series.
The plates? As a one time novelty, fun to use for a dinner party (esp beause I serve vegan food, so the only blood around is pretend.)

I shy away form all gory stuff except this show ... yeah, Dex murders. So what? He murders people who need murdering.

I can't wait for the blood spatter wallpaper! It will be a pain to line up, though! LOL!
I love the show and would really love the dinnerware if only to creep out my loved ones. The funniest thing in my family is all of us vegetarians would find it amusing but the carnivores would totally freak out.

"Dexter" is great. The idea of this stuff at the Met is great. The idea of it in my house is not--but then, they're not intended for the house. Also not great: the quasi-moral, only vaguely-logical anti-"Dexter" randomness.
P.S.: "i wonder if people would watch dexter if it were about a smart, charming, handsome rapist, child molester, or something": Of course they would. Ever heard of "Lolita"? Incredibly widely read book, Nabokov, narrated by a fella by the name of Humbert Humbert? Not that this is relative to "Dexter," because they are kind of not comparable at all, but seriously.

I love Dexter, but these are just gross. I'm trying to decide if they are as gross as the ant plates I saw somewhere yesterday. I think they are grosser. Clearly from the comments, they are good at creating conversation. May my dinner parties never be so boring that I need these to spice things up...
Dexter's splatter "paintings" on the show are actually pretty amazing.
