Dexter for Dinner?

dexter011509.jpgWe can't believe that just looking at dishes could make us feel squeamish, but it really has. The Hematolagnia place settings are definitely not for the faint of heart and we can't really imagine dining off of them, but they do make quite an impact. Jump below to see them if you can face the queasy ick-factor...you've been warned!

dexterdinnerware011509.jpg

Available from Spring in a limited edition, the handmade ceramic plates by Nadeige Choplet range in price from $60. to 135., depending on size.

dexterchairs011509.jpg
They are part of a full "Dexter" collection, put together originally for the Met Home Showtime House last fall. It includes these chairs by Amy Lau Design, dismembered flatware and more. See the whole collection at Spring.

I don't care for the idea of furniture and dishes with blood spatter.
I realize this is someone's "art", but I'm not interested.

The fact that these things were made by someone at all shows how desensitized we have become to gore and the evidence of human suffering. This is really sick.

I don't recall Dexter actually eating anyone...

And I can't think of one person I know who would be happy to eat dinner off of a blood splatter plate. In fact, I'm pretty sure that whipping out those plates at a dinner party would kill whatever witty conversation was taking place, regardless of the amount of wine already consumed That said, if the glazes were in black, or blue, as ink splatter I'd buy them in a heart-beat.

These would be great conversation pieces! They would look great with my white and red theme.

Maybe you could add the recently featured pool-of-blood pillow to the chair.

I have a fondness for blood spatter (and Dexter, but that's beside the point), but even I wouldn't eat off those plates! I might keep them around to pull out in order to gross out and amuse some of my friends, though. ;)

The chair though, is awesome. My roommates and I could design some great practical jokes to go with that chair.

the bottom left one, as a charger, doesn't bother me too much. it just looks like marbled red ink. but the top left... eww. it looks exactly like the blood in the package your steak came in. not appetizing.

here's the problem. murder is not just something that happens on a tv show w/ an extremely sexy man. it's in real life. real people, people who are loved, who are people's children or lovers, real people are shot, stabbed, chopped up, & yeah, some get eaten. it's not funny.

i'm not being a kill joy here, but have we really become this desensitized to evil?

what's next skin lamps & soaps?

I don't really get this as Dexter merchandise. Dexter is so fastidious; I can't really see this appealing to him on any level. However, if this had been a PETA initiative, I would be very impressed.

Exactly, Kaylia! This is such a bad take on kitsch. I am embarrassed for anyone who actually shells out the money for this. I think it means they have way too much money. As far as the plates go, why would anyone want to eat on a plate that looks that dirty.

I had to look up who Dexter is. I don't think these are nice dishes, but I like them a little better than the butterfly bedspread. I dunno. What on earth causes someone to need provocative bloody dishes? Or create them? I bet they get a good pat on the back, oh your so clever, bloody dish designer. I hope they post about us on AT, it's almost geekologie.

Think about not real blood on dishes compared to skeevy used mattresses that most of you seem to think is just peachy. And then take the loser of that match against the hokiest blanket on the face of the earth.

That doesn't mean we're killers or that we don't understand the horror of having someone you love taken from you. It's just silly in a Halloweeen costume kind of way. BUT I would never pay that price for Halloween decor, I'm sorry.

Apparently there is a subculture in Japan based on Injury and Blood fetishes - yes, seriously. I can't remember what it's called, but I have seen some quite gruesomely gory pictures. Photographs of peoples self-mutilation (well, more injury than mutilation) exist of this blood centered group and are even creepier than these plates.

These kind of terrify me, but they do look neat. I'd be more interested if it was blue or black and trying to emulate ink splatter, but it's an interesting concept.

how sick and twisted have we become that someone would consider making these pieces? That we watch shows like Dexter and think its cool. This makes me sick.

I'm not sure that just because you don't like it, it's "sick." I agree that these are more conversation pieces/artistic statements than they are household items. Art is always subjective. For some reason, i'm thinking of that chair a while back molding from the naked lady torso :P

They are also advertisements for the show. I don't watch the it, but i've heard good things about it. I don't think it's "celebrating" murder to tell the stories behind it anymore than The Sopranos celebrating The Mafia. In the end, it's not about the violence, it's about taking measure of the power of violence.

i wonder if people would watch dexter if it were about a smart, charming, handsome rapist, child molester, or something. my only thought is, why is committing murder in a clever way entertaining? i'm not saying anyone who likes the art or show is condoning that sort of thing. i just mean, why has our culture suddenly given the ok to show the heroes of a show kill people. it's just not very balanced. i mean, forget the plates, whatever. i'm just asking why our culture is here?

I don't think the character is meant to be seen as evil; i think he's meant to be disturbed, and i assume the show explores the difference between the two. I think the drama comes from wondering "how much longer will he only kill people who kind of deserve it and how does he feel he has the right to do so in the first place?" Don't watch it, so not sure.

Some people prefer movies/tv/books/music that challenges you to look at the world in a different way or to look at grey areas more closely. The chairs and the plates are certainly, um, challenging.

Interesting post; i think the discussion is one that more or less comes up all the time here. Not so much "what is wrong with people that they'd want to watch that," but i've certainly seen a lot of "what idiot would want a house/chair/chair like that?"

America has always celebrated brutal vigilante justice.

But somehow, when the brutality isn't masked as heroism and is instead attended by sweeping western landscapes and scenes of brooding passion, the people who watch it and enjoy it must be sick, sick, sick.

"Dexter" is great. The idea of this stuff at the Met is great. The idea of it in my house is not--but then, they're not intended for the house. Also not great: the quasi-moral, only vaguely-logical anti-"Dexter" randomness.

P.S.: "i wonder if people would watch dexter if it were about a smart, charming, handsome rapist, child molester, or something": Of course they would. Ever heard of "Lolita"? Incredibly widely read book, Nabokov, narrated by a fella by the name of Humbert Humbert? Not that this is relative to "Dexter," because they are kind of not comparable at all, but seriously.
