Product Test: Does the Shamwow Really Work?

shamwowtestpics021709.jpgThe commercial makes us laugh - the usual m.o. at our house is to fast forward through any and all commercials (we pretty much tivo everything so we don't watch much in "real time"). Even though, somehow we managed to see the Shamwow guy do his pitch and as anyone who has witnessed it knows, it is memorable. So, when we saw this "as seen on TV" lab test, we took a second took...

Popular Mechanics put the cleaning product to the test by "Soaking soda from a carpet, cleaning a spill from a plant pot, wiping kitchen countertops, turning it into a bath mat and drying off after a swim."

Their verdict? It works...but you may need to keep some other cleaning towels around as well. It seems that in the tests, it works better at fully cleaning up moisture on some surfaces than others. As part of a cleaning arsenal, it comes in handy, but isn't going to replace all other spill-picker-uppers.

Check out the full review right here at Popular Mechanics and let us know...have you tried the Shamwow? How does it work for you?

I'll take the hot Sham-Wow guy over Billy Mays any day!

I bought the giant bonus pack @ Bed Bath & Beyond to wipe down my bathroom counter. Doesn't do the job, there are still water streaks everywhere. grrr....

I'm not giving up though. I'm going to keep one in my suitcase for travel. it has to be good for something... Doesn't it?

So... it works the exact same way as a Chamois? Which we've had around our house since my father was a child?

Imagine that.

@chusmabilly,

C'mon! Vince has a certain charm, once you've seen that commercial umpteen times. Billy Mays, on the other hand, just a shill. :)

Hey! that's not Vince! Vince must have been busy slap-chopping in the green room.

That must be one of those German guys who, you know, "make good stuff."

I could see the product itself being very effective though. I bought a HAAN floor steamer and it has a special microfiber pad on it that works very well.

Art,

LOL! You had me at "slap-chopping".

My mom gave me a Sham-Wow during her last visit. It seems to work. It has a strange spongy texture that makes me not want to touch it too much tho.

Yeah. I have the jumbo pack too.

I use it as a dish drainer, although the color is beyond ugly (bright neon orange), especially when I have a lot of dishes that won't fit in the drainer - works much better than a regular towel - soaks it up and then it all evaporates from the sham.

I cut mine down and use it instead of SwifferWet refills. Just rinse and reuse!

Since the Dude you're getting a Dell guy went away, I think there's been a notable gap. I say there's no comparison, Vince would pwn. Except for the Billy Mays ESPN360 ads, compiled here:

Hmm, that's a tough one.

Thanks for the slap-chop, I never got to see that one on my tv. It is awesome.

Don't know if the ShamWOW works, but it probably does.

For larger spills, use your Snuggie.

I use this yellow Vileda cloth that I got at Ace Hardware on my Swiffer Max to mop my floors. It feels very similar to the SW and very absorbent and was very inexpensive. Way better than a mop or swiffer wet jet.
Also, TJ's absorbent kitchen cloths are also simliar and cheap and are awesome in the kitchen. I also take one in my gym bag to dry off after the shower since my gym cut the towel service (I know, whoa, cheap gym bad economy = no towels).

Old-skool cloth diapers (baby diaper service-style). The most absorbent things ever. No streaks. Love 'em.

I hate the scamwows I bought. They don't pick up moisture as well as a basic cotton towel, they've got an awful texture, they smell funny and wash them once and they turn into a shabby shrunken mess.

I also use one for a dish drainer and another for drying my car after washing. Not perfect for everything but not a waste of money either. The sports/swimmers towels made of PVC (I think that is the chemical) work better as a sponge or towel but cost a whole lot more.

haha, i love the comment about the snuggie. that made me laugh.

i have "magic towels", which are similar to the shamwows. we used them to wash our car. they worked ok.

Good suggestion with the Swiffer pad replacement! I will definitely be trying that one.

I love Billy Mays because he is so into his product that he YELLS his pitch to you. Vince is a skeev. I wouldn't trust him alone with my drink.

Anyone going to watch the reality show with Billy Mays and the Brit who sells the steam vac stuff?

Lol, London - I have the QVC rip off of the snuggie (the Slanket). BEST GIFT EVER! It's so damn soft and is great for playing video games and the laptop. And the Slanket is smaller and comes in a nice soft, dark brown.

We have what I assume is a similar item (predates horrible infomercial) that we got at Kragen to dry the car after washing. Works okay for that, but I can't imagine using one in the kitchen. Organic matter locked into the cells of the material forever, ew.

Just got back from the Coconut Grove Art Fair where there was a Sham Wow booth set up on the outskirts. The lady was really snippy and when my husband tried to see if the coke was puddled under the carpet sample, she almost slapped his wrist. Wound a little too tight.
From the comments, I'm glad we didn't buy any.

I was always amused to learn that he used to be a Scientologist till they kicked him out and he's been using the proceeds of the ShamWow and the SlapChop and his Underground comedy movie to fight back against them for defamation.

Gallivant how well does the ShamWow work for drying the car? My parents always use chamois for that and this is what the ShamWow always reminds me of.

Billy Mays is HOT! The shamwow guy is just slimy!

I have the Zorbees which is the same thing (I think) and they're good at soaking up big spills (rather than using a quarter of a roll of paper towels) but a little spill on the counter or drying a dish requires a regular towel or kitchen roll.

Does anyone else think ShamWow sounds like some kind of sexual euphemism? As in "My boyfriend just gave me a soaking wet ShamWow after SlapChopping me" Hot!

Works great on steamed-up car windows (and/or, frost on the insides of the car windows when it's so cold.)

Good for glass cleaning in general.

For girlonthem - for drying the car I wet the sham, wring it out as much as possible and it works better then than starting off bone dry.
