Insta-Playlist: Pandora

2006-11-21-pandora.pngPart of the fun of having people over is putting together a playlist. It's great to program iTunes with a perfect selection, but sometimes it's just too far down on the list of chores to get to before the doorbell rings.

That is the time to turn to Pandora, a site created by the Music Genome Project.

Tell Pandora a favorite artist, genre or song and it will start playing a whole string of music chosen based on that favorite. It is so much fun...a great way to hear new music that is similar to something you love (and to have a personalized DJ service for your gathering).

Pandora gives you the name of the every song it plays, along with the artist and the album information so if you hear something you like, you know exactly what it is and where to find it again. You can save your selections too, so you can listen to these "radio stations" based on your favorites whenever you use Pandora with out reloading the info.

We've used Pandora at dinner parties, and it has turned into a good time as guests suggest their favorites and we all see what Pandora comes up with.

And its free! Check it out at www.pandora.com.

How are you entering a genre into Pandora? I only had that option come up as a one-off. Otherwise, it only has "artist or song" on its entry. Can you just enter a genre anyway?

I love Pandora and listen to it all the time at work. It's the only way you can program up a really, truly eclectic list of your favorites -- and have what amounts to the world's coolest DJ play songs you've never heard of but that will appeal to you. I have only two beefs -- Pandora plays songs in genre blocs rather than in a completely random fashion -- and I can't play Pandora in my car!
