Tip for Large Parties: Split Up the Seating

A couple of weekends ago, we went to a baby shower where the food was served in a beautiful, buffet-style spread. Rather than seat everyone at one big table, the hostess split up the dining room into several small tables, with some tables spilling over into neighboring rooms.

It worked really well. People split up into smaller groups of 3-4 and had more intimate conversations than they might have at one huge table. It also allowed the party to spill out of the dining room and into the kitchen and foyer, which created good flow.

Although this house was by no means small, this can be a good solution for entertaining in an apartment that doesn't have room for a big table. Use side, card, or folding tables to accommodate the extra people. Buffet style works best, since people can grab their food and choose their own seats.
