High and Low: Entryway Storage Systems

2-17-09cutter.jpg

Manufactured by Skagerak Denmark, this two-part system provides storage and a place to sit down and tie your shoes. The teak Cutter Stool and Box were originally intended for the garden, until the designers discovered another useful application in the entryway. The Cutter Stool, Box, and Bench are available from Fjorn Scandinavian, where prices range from $150 to $825, but we also found a less expensive version...

IKEA's MOLGER series includes a bench and storage stool that range from $30 - $40. The left photo shows the MOLGER bench paired with wicker baskets, but the ESTETISK magazine box ($24.99) offers a solid wood look that's more similar to the Cutter system.

• IKEA's MOLGER and ESTETISK systems are available in stores.

We bought 2 of the Molger stools last year as (what we thought would be) the perfect entrance solution.

The looked totally ridiculous - they're too tall and the seat cover is really cheap terry cloth. They were quickly returned.

I think if you wanted to do a bit of DIY, like make a better upholstered seat and perhaps shorten the legs, they might be okay but they're kinda flimsy. Don't get too excited.

I bought the bench after searching high and low for a good bench for my kitchen/entryway. It works very well, but put some pillows on it, it's hard on the bum. My only complaint is that the darn cats like sitting on it so much I have to kick them off to use it.

Isn't all this granted you actually have an entryway that isn't part of another room? Our entryway is our door opening up against a wall and you are literally walking into the living room (also my desk area). The only piece that looks useful in a small space is the first one since it could also work as an end table.

Okay, this I absolutely have to share. Our boot cabinet has transformed our entryway and is such a great looking addition to the space. Apparently these things are big in Japan. http://stylenorth.ca/blog/2008/10/entryway-makeover/

I use the Molger bench as my coffee table, and I love it. It's a great piece of furniture.

In our entryway we use an antique childrens' school desk. the top lifts open to store our odds and ends and there is a little seat. See it here:
