Small Space Problem Solver: Wall Hung Boot Rack

entryway021109.jpgWe definitely do not have a mudroom or even a proper entryway in our Chicago apartment - our front door opens right into the main living/dining area. The challenge (which we've talked about before): what to do with wet, muddy, icy or otherwise icky boots? One (very good) solution is a boot tray. BUT, what about when you live in a small home or apartment with little or as in our case, no floor space to spare?

We just ran across this wall hung "Chore Boot Rack" which is available for $17.95 for a multi book rack or $9.50 for a single boot rack at Gemplers.

It's utilitarian design is a simple as it gets so there isn't much to love (or hate!) about the look but the functionality is why we'd be giving this a try.

Because of our set up, we tend to end up putting a boot tray in the corner of our kitchen area to get it out of the main room, which means it is eating up precious floor space in an already small (and busy) room. The possibility of getting wet books up and off the floor, allowing them to dry faster AND finding a way to utilize some otherwise dead lower wall space in a kitchen corner makes this item pretty interesting to us...what do you think?

Well, I think your wall is likely to get muddy, so I'd recommend planning for that -- maybe make a "back splash" with a vinyl placemat or something?

We just have a somewhat larger than usual entry rug and just past where the door swings we leave our shoes. Not aesthetic, but works for us. (Since the door in question leads to the "breakfast nook" in the kitchen, we use the chair right there for putting shoes on.)

well if the boots are muddy and wet when you put them up there, that will probably drip down the boots, no? potentially soaking into cloth boot interiors and making a mess on the floor? i dig the thing for potential other uses though...would make just a neat fixture for an entry in general. you could hand umbrellas on it, hangers, mittens, scarves. screwed onto the top of a desk, a few of them could organize paper stuff or books. neat little gadget. =)

This might work in a garage, but you are going to mess up your walls and your floors with all the dripping. If you only wear one pair of boots at a time (which, I assume you all do because you only have one set of legs), why not keep the dry ones in a closet and set the currently wet ones on a towel? It only takes up as much space as one pair of boots/shoes takes and you're saving your walls a whole lot of muddy grossness.

A nice way to store boots! Maybe not wet ones, though. But I'm sure something could be worked out.

This is definitely more for a garage. I leave my boots out in the hallway outside my front door. Everyone in my building does it that way.

But, who wants to see the bottoms of your boots? There's usually some pretty nasty stuff stuck in them. I just think this is such a weird concept.

I am all in favor of hanging bunches of DRY muddy or salty boots as an awesome wall decoration, but you're not going to want to put them up there wet. You will still need a place to dry them.

I'm looking at that little four-legged rectangular stool you have in the foyer. Why not nail a rubber mat into those wooden legs? You could dry the wet boots there under the stool, and the boots would follow wherever the stool goes; then hang the dry boots up at eye level where they can be admired and appreciated.

(Even better if you can kick that stool over to a heating vent or radiator for faster boot drying.)

It's a stock photo, not Janel's foyer. Gorgeous, though.

It's one of those utilitarian things you're supposed to use in a garage. I don't have the right kind of boots that would fit in the slots, but I would use something like that, whaddya call "repurpose"? Something in the kitchen for towels or pans, something in the bedroom or closet for hanging belts or purses, or even maybe if your closet isn't deep enough for normal clothes hanging and hang them side to side, lengthwise, whatever.

Wet, muddy, slushy, salty boots do need a place, but I think this hanger would make the most mess of any boot solution, keep it to the garage or mud room. This is so totally a product that you can use for many non-boot type items anywhere in the house that you can think of.
