Cotton Fabric Illustrated by Eric Carle

20080731carle1.jpgWe recently blogged about design influenced by beloved childhood books. We didn't mention Eric Carle specifically but you guys did! You knew what what you were talking about because this beloved author/illustrator has already stepped into our ring. His designs have inspired some fun and nostalgic fabric.

20080731carle8.jpgCarle's most famous work is probably The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Caterpillar fabric is available but we're more excited about the abstract designs.

We love the bright colors and bold, playful patterns. We're aching to see a chair reupholstered in the numbers, scribble, or color dot fabric. The fruit and junk food design would make great kitchen curtains.

All the fabric is 100% cotton and most patterns sell for $8/yard at The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art. If you buy, make sure to upload your creation to The Eric Carle Fabric flickr pool!

LOVE this. It would be so perfect for a child's room.

Awesome! A few years back I got to work with Carle on making some toys based on his books. (He's wonderful to work with, by the way) and we made these tiny little purses of the Very Hungry Caterpillar ... I kept wanting to make them out of different fabrics but everyone else was like, "no no no! let's make them beaded!" And in all fairness, the beaded purses did come out awesome, but the dots fabric above is exactly like what I had been picturing. I MUST buy some now, although I don't know yet what kind of project I'd use it for. I love the lime green numbers too. He has such fabulous texture to his work.
