Name: Ashley C.
Location: Kansas City, KS
Type: Owned 4-bedroom suburban McMansion

Why I use color: Because white (and suburbia) are boring.

2 good color tips:

1. Orange goes with everything.

2. And, using a glaze with a circular pattern really adds great depth and interest.

2 good color resources:

1. The complete color directory by Alice Westgate.

2. Indian cookbooks (spice colors are fab).

Such a rich color! I painted my bedroom an orange that was meant to look like this but instead it felt like I was sleeping inside a pumpkin. A rotting pumpkin. Not good.

But maybe if I'da had the guts to do the glaze thing...

This is beautiful and the texture makes it even prettier.

I hate this. I hate that spongework stuff. The glazework looks really dated.

So, in the Northeast category there are some people getting upset about folks being negative and not giving "constructive criticism". Instead of simply saying "I don't like this" I'll say what I'd do instead.

First of all: I would have commited to a color instead of doing glazing. I would instead have used a color with more depth. A warm red or a darker orange.

Second: The space is way too big for such small furniture and accents. The table and chairs get engulfed by the room, the picture on the wall looks lonely, and the pendant lamp/chandelier is somewhere between styles.

The space either needs to be updated or commited to. You could do alot with the flora/fauna theme you have going on. Put more plants in there, put more pics up on that wall, get a larger table...

That's just my two cents.

Ashley gets my vote for the brevity and wit of her prose.

Lucky, lucky you to have such high ceilings! I bet your place feels super airy.

I feel like the texture on the wall needs more subtlety which I think would give even more depth or, yes, it will feel dated after a while. The table is great, but the chairs are wrong. Everything on the wall is the wrong size. A couple of large things would be better than a bunch of small things and also would give a chance to better incorporate other colors. I see it sort of happening with the stuff on the table, but they're too small to matter.

I like the textured walls.

ORANGE does NOT go with everything- period.

posted by TJ on 2006-10-15 10:31:56

let's just say i am not surprised this is a mcmansion - so "kitchy" (don't know how to spell it).

try to reflect yourself instead of doing things that you think are trendy and hip. it falls short.

if you are going to live in/buy a mcmansion, embrace it. don't try to pretend it is something it is not.

also - don't use the indian term here - our colors are far deeper and purer than this dilute butternut squashy one....

there seems to be some pre-conceptions afoot here in the comments

mcmansion

indian spice

orange

hostility in the comments re: alt painting techniques and space organization and color preference is a bit bizarre

perhaps "no way, jose" should be changed to "not my taste, thanks for sharing"

This is the coolest dining area I have ever seen. The bold color on the single accent wall really brings out the texture of the glaze and shows off the photograph beautifully. Props to whoever painted this... the consistancy of the texture is astounding. Way to make the suburbs more interesting.

no. faux finishes are just so ...ironical. so pomo. so eighties.

posted by purejuice on 2006-10-16 11:48:43

This is totaly not my taste, but orange does = color. I'm also thinking it looks out of date. Then again, I never really was a fan of sponge work. SOrry...

yeah. i really hate faux-finishes, it's so very 'frank' of trading spaces.

OK, I would really like to remove my submission. Now when I look at our wall all of these negative comments enter my head. I really love this wall. It is warm and inviting and creates a texture I envy that exists in older homes.
I am really sad that I my furniture is being criticized too-everything in that room was either a gift or a hand-me down and I happen to think it's a great ecclectic mix-each individual piece is full of memories (the table is from my husband's childhood, the dining chairs were in my family, the photograph was a wedding gift as well as the jade plate in the corner).
Anyway, I don't mean to "boo-hoo" the whole thing but please save it if all you have to say is you hate it. I'm guessing a lot of this hostility is coming out because I live in suburbia-now I am wishing I hadn't shared that.

Ashley:

You love this wall and that is all that matters. I happen to like it too, but that doesn't really matter - no more than any of the mean comments you received here. Those comments say more about those people than they say about your room. Enjoy your room - you deserve to.

I like this. It feels warm and inviting. Color is subjective, everyone is different, so if you like it, then enjoy.

If you love your place, that is all that matters.
Your place caught my boyfriend's and my eye because it is inviting and has warmth. We like the glazed finish and commented on why more people don't use it. I can't remember when faux finishes, when used appropriately as an accent, became 'dated.' In fact, we think that your place is one of the few that doesn't appear as if you are 'trying' to fit into a trendy/hip motif.

posted by AY on 2006-10-18 15:47:38

Yea, screw all these other folks, I like the glazed finish too and that's how I'll probably end up painting some rooms in my house... and in the latest issue of one of my magazines, there's a faux painted wall that's just yummy! (p.s. a lot of commentors around here are very snotty and stuck-up little brats so I'd ignore them if I were you):) Oh and I like the chandalier too...

If there is one thing that has set interior design back 50 years it's the suburban affinity for faux paint finishes. Ugh.

posted by b on 2006-10-24 20:21:21

please, spare the drama-50 years? design is design is design. hello-it all recycles.

posted by no drama on 2006-10-24 22:35:52

ashley--

i love your walls. i think a lot of the commenters on AT just can't accept anything which doesn't have any Eames chair in it. which is fine, everyone has their own style and the AT definately has a more modern style. But the fact that they don't like your design doesn't mean it is objectively bad. Be glad for the negative comments--they tell you what people don't like about your apartment. since you know their reasons and think their reasons are hogwash, you can ignore the no way votes. you're in a much better spot than those entrants with lots of neg votes and almost no comments.
