apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#29 - Fritz's Happy Hideaway

Name: Fritz
Location: St. Paul, MN
Type: 2 bedroom home, owned

Why we use color: Color can transform an ordinary room into something completely different. It can evoke moods and colors can connect you with a certain sense of time or place. I have been slowly adding color to my home which was painted entirely white by the previous owners. I lived with the white bedroom for a long time which was a change for me. My last place had very intense dark, deeply saturated colors. This time around I have opted for brighter colors which I think give a happier mood. I used the chocolate to keep the orange, blue and gold from taking over to much. The colors are warm and really help make the room very cozy. You need that when you have extremely long and cold winters.

2 good color tips:

1. If you are hesitant about how a color will look maybe start with an accent wall. If you live with the color for a while and you like it you can get bolder or just paint over one wall rather than an entire room.

2. Accessories are an instant way to add color and you can move them from room to room!

2 good color resources:

1. I accumulate a lot of magazines. Not only magazines that focus on the home but also look to graphic design and garden magazines. They have great examples of style and color.

2. Also, paint chips are a great way to experiment with color. You can see how certain colors will work together. The color chips can represent not only the wall color but also the fabric, pillows, rugs and other elements you might want to use in the room. And if you have limited color sense you can just use the paint scheme cards to keep you on track.

I like this a lot. I love the beddings, the rug...and the mirror. This room is just pretty overall. Good job at choosing colors that go together very nicely and create a soothing yet fun vibe. In Contention

I have a mirror very similar to yours over my bed; looks great at your house too!

What a lovely space. It's very warm and lived in. I like entries like this that are not necessarily superstar instafinalist, but rather just give us the pleasure of seeing someone else's cozy well-designed home.

Not splashy, but shows an excellent understanding of color & application. A beautiful room.

Haha, did anyone else notice the glass on the side of the bed? It's crystal or something. That's some fancy detailing!! Cute...

Very nice! LOVE the use of color without being overwhelmed. Very nice, easy on the eyes. Comfortable. I am sure this is such a pleasurable place to tuck away for the night. INSTA-FINALIST!!

Love that rug! Is it shades of green? Hard to see but attractive!

Ooh I love the draping fabric behind the bed...very dramatic, very romantic.

I like the colour combinations as well- they make the room look well adjusted and warm.

Nice job!

wow. i'm surprised by how many people don't like this one. any of you "no way jose!" voters want to explain why?
i voted in-contention by the way-- the colours are unexpected (for me anyway) and yet they work.

I like it.

The only thing I don't like is the sun mirror thing.

Also, would have been nice to see other angles.

I like this very much because it's very colorful without being too matchy-matchy. The only thing I don't care for, is the sun mirror above the bed.

BEAUTIFUL. Wonderful use of colour and just enough pattern to make it interesting without being hard on the eyes.

Insta finalist in my book. Love it.

Why is everyone submitting two pics of the exact same space?

I just love this room! I wanna cuddle up and sleep there. I don't know what it is because you decorated with two of my least favorite colors, red and yellow, but they look so good. First of all, I think you chose the right shade of yellow. I think a lot of the time people go too light and it ends up looking washed out or dingy. This is a bright, beautfiul clean yellow. The room is cozy, but the lamps add a lot of chic too the room. I adore your nightstand, where'd you get that? I love the color and also the patterns on the pillows.

Nice work. I particularly like the matching Adler lamps, their shape really softens up the entire room. This look could be improved with a solid wood headboard. The open metal frame really distracts from the beautiful orange curtain hanging behind it. Otherwise, a very nice use of what looks like a somewhat small space.

not my taste, but use of color is the motive force here; it adds energy and coze and elegance and wit to the bed. as everyone should.

I'm picturing those curtains up by the headboard parting and Pinhead coming out - is that what happens?

A much more sophisticated combination of colors than we have seen in most of the other entries. It's very warm, and the shades of rust, yellow and brown layer well... and the cool grey balances it all perfectly. It's a tricky balance, which is what makes this execution so skillful. Anyone care to elaborate on their "No Way, Jose"?

Ahead of its time yet classic and contemporary...the past and future collide in the present. Combines the look of a set piece with the feel of a comfortable, balanced living space. Insta-finalist! :-D

The curtain with the hanging in the middle really works beautifully. Unique idea!
