apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#3 - Dan K.'s Bright Two-Bedroom Shotgun

Name: Dan K.
Location: New Orleans, LA
Type: 2 bedroom shotgun (railroad)

Why I use color: Color is an easy and effective way to radically transform a room. Just a little paint and careful use of details transformed my bedroom from a crumbling white box into a warm and comfortable home which is a delight to stay in.

2 good color tips:

1. Use 3M painters' tape. 3M was about 5 times the cost of the generic (Ace Brand, in this case). I tried them both, and the 3M is worth the cost. The generic pulled the underlying paint and even some plaster off the wall.

2. I was afraid that the lowered crown moldings would make my ceiling look low, and had originally planned to fill in the space about them with some stenciling or wallpaper trim to bring the eye all the way up. After living with it, though, I realized the open space above the crown had the opposite effect as I had expected--because the top of the wall matches the ceiling, the ceiling sort of disappears, as if the walls never stop going up.

2 good color resources:

1. This book: Decorative Painting & Faux Finishes

2. Why, Apartment Therapy of course!

Now THIS is what I'm talking about! I love it!

Sorry, I just don't get a sense of imagination or inspiration in this color scheme. I remember seeing red and yellow all the time in catalogs like Ballard Designs, or Pottery Barn back in the 90's.

Bright, bold and warm -- a great combination.

Looks like a lot of "no way" votes but not lots of explanation about why...Aren't ya s'pozed to explain yerself?

All the different reds make me uncomfortable.

I love red. And I don't think that they should all match because it might look a little too matchy, matchy if you know what I mean.

I think the red really warms up your place!

I am a huge fan of "bold" moves, I really liked the walls but the bedding and curtain must go...try making the red the accent color, so it does not compete with the yellow on the walls so much.

aren't those stuffed animals tacky? this isn't a kids room. and the way that the clock hits the line between the yellow wall and above is just bad composition.
