#48 - xym0x 's Natural Multicolor Bath

Name: xym0x
Location: London, Ontario
Type: 3 level condo, owned

Why I use color: I used color to add interest to this tiny bathroom. Natural multicolor slate tiles against the grey floor and natural wood make this space relaxing, but not boring. Even if you look at the tiles everyday - you will always be able to find something interesting in the multitude of their earth tones (my favorite past time while brushing my teeth). Did I already mention, that it's also inexpensive and a completely DIY project?

2 good color tips:

1. Don't be afraid of using strong, dark colors in small spaces - if you can't make them bigger, you can at least make them interesting (diversion'technique').

2. Be brave and break stereotypes - dark doesn't mean depressed and pastel - happy color is perceived in as many ways, as there are people, so try different colors before you decide what's not for you.

2 good color resources:

1. Your plate and your local produce market.

2. Art through the centuries.

You have a gorgeous bathroom wall, and props on doing the work yourself. Not enough to go on to be a finalist, but you should definitely enter the bathroom competition when it rolls around again; I'm sure you'd do well then.

Pretty, but it doesn't belong in a "bold use of color" contest.

oh! Missy, I might have missed the "bold use of color" part ;) (BTW, I don't see it anywhere)
to me this is color, but it probably isn't a truly objective statement ;)

What a beautiful use of natural colors. I think a lot of us think of color and think "paint" but this is a nice use of a material with nice natural color. I might steal this. :p

While this is not the most colorful entry to date, I think it deserves attention for being interesting and colorful in an unexpected way. There is a lot of color in this room-- mainly from one source, the slate. Most of the entries feature several walls or rooms with different color, but I don't see that as an interesting use of color, just that they used color.

This is beautiful because it is colorful without clashing, warm and inviting and it uses a material that you'd normally walk across as the showpiece of the room. It has texture and depth that you don't get from a painted wall. AND he doesn't need colorful art or furnishings to finish the space.

It's great.

Can you tell us more about how you put this wall together? All those are natural slate? Amazing

Hey xym0x :)

This is on the front page. And "bold use of color" was my translation of what we were supposed to be looking for/judging.

"Criteria

Readers and judges will evaluate each submission to find the boldest, coolest, most colorful room along with all the tips and resources we need to get color ourselves."

Again, I need to reiterate I LOOVE the room .. very pretty. And there is definitely color, but I could not judge it as being bold and innovative as being in interior design for some years now, I've seen California Slate on the walls before ... (and if that's not Cali Slate .. please excuse my flub ..lol!)

The wall is horrifying.
The only thing that is palatable is the toilet, which is fine, actually.

thanks for all the comments

Maryam, my husband and I tiled this wall in one day (grouting took us another day) using natural slate tiles. The process is identical as with any other tiling job, except we had to check if our wall would withstand the weight of the tiles (I so miss 'real' European architecture ;)- the brick & mortar type). It might not be innovative as Missy pointed out, but at the time we did it, I thought otherwise (a year after our reno I saw an identical wall in H&G magazine).

Beautiful.

And I am surprised that it doesn't have more In Contention and Insta- Finalist votes.

Why is it that entries with a more neutral palette are disregarded in many senses.....there is a wonderful use of colour in this room- the stone goes wonderfully with the paint colour, the sink vanity and the lav lighten up what could look otherwise heavy.

Great job. I would LOVE to have this be my bathroom.

clearly some people have no concept of color - take off the blinders!!!!! Insta Finalist for me!

sharona, the sink/stand combo is from ghmm... IKEA (so is the tall cabinet, vis a vis my slate wall)

Hi xym0x -

Thanks for writing back! What does ghmm stand for? You got the sink/stand combo from Ikea?? Really?? I didn't see it in the catalog. Did you make it yourself? If so, how?

Congratulations on your honorable mention!
