apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#5 - Tim L.'s Anti-Beige Loft

Name: Tim L.
Location: Chicago
Type: 1 bedroom loft, pictures are of the "great room"...a combined kitchen and living room.

Why I use color: A colorful environment stirs my creativity. I love the color black, and use it throughout my place. It helps to make artwork stand out, especially brighter pieces. I live in a loft, and the color helps define spaces.

2 good color tips:

1. Experiment and test different colors in your spaces. I find using a rainbow of colors or the extreme of being too matchy-matchy doesn't work for me.

2. I try to void overuse of white in my place, and I refuse to use beige. It is way overused by people trying to play it safe.

2 good color resources:

1. Many cities have fashion weeks. These are great places to see color used in new and exciting ways.

2. Graphic design can provide a wealth of ideas of ways to use color creatively.

Tim is my neighbor, does that mean my vote doesn't count?

(Way to go Tim!)

Sharp! You have made me think about black in a whole new way

very brave - many people shy away from black, but you've used it here to really define the space and provide a soothing, relaxed background - bravo!

I love the black--designers always freak out when they hear someone is thinking of painting a room or wall black. Black denotes strength and authority; it is considered to be a very formal, elegant, and prestigious color (black tie, black Mercedes) Tim you have proven those proessionals wrong--it complements and defines the space perfectly and adds that :"WOW" factor everyone is looking for!

This is something I never would have thought of doing, but I really like it! (especially the red upholstered bench, and the way it pops against the black.)

Well done!!

You get points for using the phrase "anti-beige." And I'm surprised by how much I enjoy the dark grays in your place. Very hip. Kudos!

Tim,

Dude, this is the most AMAZING design I've ever seen. Can I hire you to come do my place? I've been looking at professionally designed rooms for years and this is at the top of the list. Phenomenal!

BAM! I love the charcol and red together. However, can you do something to tone down the contrast between the cabinets and the wall? Maybe paint them a super glossy black (to match the appliances) and use textured frosted glass inserts in the uppers with backlighting. Or brushed stainless might be nice.

LOVE that red leather ottoman.
And really love art on a deep-colored wall.

I like this a lot. I like that it's mostly grey with some red accents. Love the farmer's market flowers as the pop of color in the kitchen. It would be cool to see something interesting on the top of the cabinets , lots of open space up there.

Overall, this really conveys the personality of the owner and I like that.

wow. those cabinets sort of ruin the look. don't they? it seems that is what threw you out of the running. nice charcoal walls though.

Random furniture in front of matte black walls makes me think I'm looking at the midnight show at ImprovOlympic. That makes me think of drunk chicks in uncomfortable chairs, and I can't get it out of my mind.
