#50 - Jim's Stage for Beautiful Objects

Name: Jim
Location: Logan Square, Chicago
Type: 3 bedroom rental

Why I use color: I use it to set the stage for what I consider beatiful objects. The right steelworker grey to show off a farmhouse green, the same way good denim shows off a white t-shirt. I think the color and patina of the things within a room define it, the way different color books stack together, or the way wool looks against leather or chrome. This way the room is shifting and improvising in mood on a daily basis.

2 good color tips:

1. I avoid painting an entire room the same color, paint certain walls, leave others. Use the angles and the architecture of the room when painting.

2. If you decide on a color swatch, go one shade lighter.

2 good color resources:

1. There are beautifully rich, and weathered colors at flea markets. Look for old hardcover book covers, they often have amazing color combinations you may not have thought of.

2. Check you closet, use your wardrobe palette for ideas.

I think someone has a little A.D.D. when it comes to the placing of his furniture. It's Okay I have it too.
I like how there are about 5 lamps all very similar on every flat surface 'cept the coffee table and the tall wooden cabinet. That Cabinet looks like it's sole purpose is to hide something behind it.? Why is it angled like so?

Also does one room really need three throw blankets?
sorry I really didnt notice the color of the walls--although I am a big fan of Grey in Living spaces.

Hey, you're not JimInLoganSquare from LTH, are you?
(I realize that Jim is a common name and lots of folks live in Logan Square).

Anyway I love green and grey together: soothing. I think maybe just the photos don't show the grey very well. That shade is about the color that white turns into when you have your camera on auto. Too bad, it seems you have a good sense for good lighting with the big windows and lots of lamps!

I love where this room is going. Are you allowed to paint the walls? A nice yellow would make every object in that room "pop".

With a place like this, it's better not to go out purposely to get coordinating accessories. I think it's better to continue picking up accessories that appeal to you. Every piece of furniture you have in there is interesting, especially those two loveseats. It may not win the contest but I love it just the same. Great job.

I love that little green cabinet. This room intrigues me. In an age where everyone paints their found objects to match (which is great too, don't get me wrong), it's neat to see them in their original states.

Jim, are your couches pink or is that just the light? And wish I could see that intriguing looking art - are those prints?

I think it's got great style and would love to see more.

I love this room . . . the colors, the textures, the lovely older things. None of it looks like the idea came from a catalog page, but it tells us a lot about the character of its owner. A true sign of great design.

There are some great objects here, but I'm just not getting a sense of the color design. Maybe going "1 shade lighter" was too light? At least for my eyes.

I'm so totally lost here. This looks like the apartment of college students that have furniture from everywhere just really trying to make things work.

I'm very open, but I just cannot see the style, design sense or use of color here at all. I do understand Jim's thinking from his snippet, but I don't see it happening successfully.

I agree with Missy. I think Jim skillfully selected items he liked, but I think other entries show more skillful uses of color.

I agree that the grey helps show off the farmhouse green, but the effect is lost in the fleamarket of random colors and textures. Good demin contrasts with a white t-shirt, but not if you're also wearing a polka-dot overcoat, stripped socks, and a red top hat.

I love everything about this place! Walls don't need to be painted you have tons of color (not overbearing) like other entries. Someone pointed out it doesn't look coordinated - thank goodness for that. This place looks lived in and all your pieces are great. Love the green cabinet, black drapes, and pink or red sofa loveseats. Leave your walls alone they look fine especially with the wood framing the windows and molding. Beautiful space good luck!

cielo - you are easy.

it looks, at best, like a graduate student apartment. or a semi-reasonably-adept college student.

the room has potential. I wish the furniture was placed with more care.

mmm ~ I think that's your perception of this space. I actually do like it and I'm being sincere when I say it - not easy. But it's alright sometimes we need the internet to vent. So go ahead be my guest.

It looks good. Maybe he likes the furniture exactly where it is?!?!?!?!

Thanks for comments. J.P., tall cabinet is hiding the TV (Tivo for life), and the stereo. I do have alot of throws, three more on a couch you can't see. Mostly to tone down the red of the loveseats, and to keep it from sun fading, I think I have to replace the red couches. Maryam, art is friends paintings and prints (original Chris Ware 'Jimmy Corrigan' panel). Joe and Missy pipe down! Anna, don't know LTH, do know CvsD. Peace out.

This room has character. You have some really interesting objects, and I like the subtlety of the colors. I think "rich and weathered" is just as valid a color scheme as "candy colors", so I voted insta-finalist.

"pipe down" .. oh my .. I thought we were supposed to give our opinions. But I'm interested to see in your 110 NO WAY votes, that most agreed with me.

So perhaps I needn't "pipe down" as much as you could perhaps find some style.

posted by Missy on 2006-10-30 12:35:27

I like it. It looks sort of like where I imagine a hip college professor would live. With that being said, I do agree that there are too many throws and that the cabinet is at a bizarre angle- as if you moved it to dust underneath and never put it back! Also, while it's a nice space, I don't see it as being appropriate for a contest that focuses on colors, since it has no discernable color scheme... it doesn't detract from the space, but certainly limits its potential in the Fall Colors Contest!

I like the way you've used the vintage pieces. "Casual Eclectic." But I think what might be throwing it a bit off...though I have not seen mentioned...are the rugs?!! Maybe something bolder on the floors would help stabilize the layout. Otherwise, I think it looks comfortable.

Jim--
What are the two similar images on the left wall in the first pic?

Cool room.

The wall color shades from gray to white to almost pink on my computer monitor -- it's hard to get a sense of what it really looks like.

I like the old, weathered objects.

Partick, The 2 similar images are 2 oil paintings on canvas of boxers, the one on the right has boxing gloves on, the one on the left is 'bare-fisted'. They were painted by my friend Chris Johnson.
