apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#55 - Lorne's Nashville Blues

Name: Lorne
Location: Nashville, TN
Type: 2 bedroom bungalow, owned

Why I use color: My Goal is a free book. You can say whatever as long as I'm in the top 100. Hey Maxwell, I want my book signed, please. Please!!
Blue is an obsession. The idea for my place was to drown in blue. Just to see if I can overdose. I haven't yet. My dining room is not so monochromatic. So for the sake of a free book, and the love of AT, I'll give you a peek of my dining room. So basically my use of color is out of a compulsion to saturate everything in blue.

2 good color tips:

1. Let's be honest, you may not want color tips from me. My theory is paint everything blue, then paint over things that bug you. I used to work as a scenic painter, (before I had to get a job that pays, finance...yuck!!!. Nashville is not the best MKT for scenic painters, but it's home) so, I'm not afraid of a roller.

2. Oh, I'm an oops paint hawk. Oops paint is awesome.

2 good color resources:

1. Springtime. Redbuds are my favorite.

2. There are some great colors in the wall paper featured on AT and Design Sponge.

Although I am one of the *green* junkies, and blue is probably my least fav color to decorate with (see Northwest #36) I totally admire your enthusiasm and energy. I love your attitude-you sound like a totally fun person...

What is Oops paint? Where did you get the red-dot
thingy hanging on the wall?
Hope you get your book!

Chrisy, oops paint is a batch of paint that was specially made for someone but the color didn't come out right or the customer never came to pick it up. The store then sales it at a discount. I think Home Depot sells it the cheapest - $5 a gallon, whereas Lowes sells it for $11 a gallon (at least in houston). You can get smaller quantities too. Either way though, it's a bargain and a ton of fun (if you like that sort of thing, and I do :)

And Lorne does sound like a ton of fun. I found myself hoping s/he(?) was in Texas because I want to be their friend :)

And I too hope you get a book out of this, Lorne. Good luck :)

The mix of peach and electric blue is an interesting pairing - one that doesn't really work for me.

Love that flower on black! That adds some life to the space.

I'm with Jessica. I love the flower. It energizes and personalizes the space.

Great color on the table/chairs, but they look like they'd be very uncomfortable.

Hey Chrisy, along with the flower, the wall hanging was done as a mock up for a potential client. It's just two pieces of canvas with holes cut out then off set a bit. Boliyou the chairs are actually comfortable once you get in them. A bit hard to get out of.
Thanks,

wow. I wish I could see more of the place, I love the restraint and simplicity you have pulled off, which is amazing. I love the vintage looking cart with the outdoor looking dining room set, and the blue vases tie them together and yet conform to simple geometry. I am having a little trouble getting used to the flower, but like it more each time I look at it. I guess it provides punch. Great work. I want a tour!

You guys are too nice. That's so cool! To be honest, I was hoping for some of the snooty obnoxious responses that are so funny. I get a kick out of those.

I LOVE THE FLOWER PAINTING IS BEAUTIFUL. BLUE IS GREAT!! BUT I'M AFRAID IF I GOT DOWN IN THOSE CHAIRS I WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO GET UP. HEHE!!

lorne, well, I can't hate on you too hard, even if you were looking forward to snark, because I admire you picking a favorite color that makes you happy, and sticking to it.

That said, blue makes me sad and cold. Your apartment would cause imminent hypothermia. I think you should totally paint everything yellow, even though I live probably a thousand miles away and you don't know me from Adam.

Nifty lily painting though. I like it 'cause its not blue.

Lorne,
I am laughing out loud at your comment, "I was hoping for some snooty obnoxious comments." Hilarious! I have been trying to be careful since I really pissed people off on #49 - East. I even learned a new word "snarky." I was acting snarky. but, I felt I needed to give a comment why I voted No Way Jose. I see a lot of those votes and no explanation as to why. And further in my defense, I have used my real name and offered up my place for "snarkiness."

Speaking of voting, I am really surprised the way the voting is going on your entry. I think it is lovely. I found myself intrigued by your desire to paint everything blue. I was in a similar situation, wanted to paint everything pink, including bricks and stones, etc.

So would you please paint that rolling cart blue? Perhaps a midnight blue? And don't worry about it being a vintage or anything, you don't look like a purist to me. Besides, antiques seldom sell for what they are worth, so when you are making a powerful aesthetic statement, go for it all the way.
