Fall Colors 2006 Finalist #10: Mod Diva's Pug-A-Licious Pad

Name: Mod Diva
Location: Chicago
Type: Rented 2 bedroom apartment
Go to: Original Entry - Mod Diva's Pug-A-Licious Pad

Mod Diva's favorite OTHER entry:

Marilyn and Peter's Home Studio Harmony - We really enjoyed this entry because we felt as if this was the "grown up" version of our place, while still keeping a whimsical feel to the space. More muted colors with a white backdrop worked well, too, as opposed to the bright colors we used. Like us, they chose to keep the walls white and the carpets, accessories, and furniture in fun colors.

What do you want to do next in your home, if anything, to improve it?:

In December, we plan to move back to our "real" home in Sun Valley, CA. We have been living in Chicago for the past year, trying to make a home for ourselves in rental apartments that don't allow us to paint, and trying to make do with vintage finds of furniture and accessories to make our apartment feel like our "home".

Our house in California is very much the same way our apartment is set up (a clean white canvas for our walls and crazy colors in our rugs, furniture and accessories). I feel the best thing about our current place is that we did it all on a shoestring budget (re-upholstered period pieces of furniture and awesome finds on E-bay and Craigslist) and we didn't have to sacrifice our wallets to acheive our style.

When we get back into our house, we plan to re-do our bathrooms in colorful glass tile mosaic, expand our 1234 sq. ft., 1954 MCM home, and by some miracle, put terrazzo flooring in our kitchen.

The Pugs!!
I love your DIY-savvy meets one-of-a-kind uniqueness. Good luck in the contest and have fun with your upcoming projects in your California home.

How do you get your pugs to pose like that? It's amazing.

Personally, I still do not care for it. But I think the additional photos of the dining and office area are cute and sell the place better than the original photos. Hmm, perhaps my dislike of dogs is influencing my thought.

hanifa, I kind of understand what you are saying. I try not to let the fact that I hate cats so much influence my opinion of (pictures of) people's homes with cats in the pictures.
I think this home is colorful and fun, probably lived in by people who try to enjoy themselves and not be too serious.

The pugs are totally influencing my opinion of this home. I LOVE THOSE PUGS.

So here goes: Your place looks like candy and would be a great place for kids.

well, this was inevitable. after seeing more photos I'll admit that you might actually be aiming to achieve a "60's retro mod" look. you just fell really, really short as far as I can see. a nelson ball clock and marshmallow style headboard does not a mod home make. I still don't like it but I do enjoy marilyn and peter's home studio in skokie. perhaps our tastes aren't so many worlds apart after all.

p.s. I think your headboard is DIY, not "DYI".

I thought that this was a cute, bright entry, but not one of my favorites. I bet this is a cheery place to live though and I like your pugs.

I would vote it first place for the pugs alone!

I like the additional pictures more than the original entry, but I'm still not totally sold. In my opinion the white still makes it look sparse and unstructured. A neutral color on the walls would take it away from that "blank canvas" look and unify the space more. Maybe the same shade of grey-brown thats on the snouts of your pooches?

For me, it's not the white walls that stand in the way of this looking unified. White walls can, in fact, be the perfect backdrop for colorful furniture and accents. In this case, the accents just seem way too busy and do not invoke a mod atmosphere for me.

What could be cuter than a passel of pugs.

This is a riot. A riot of color and a riot of good cheer. Kudos! Wish I were a pug in your place.

I like the idea of using various bright colors against white (especially if you can't paint) but I don't like many of the actual colors chosen ... at least, the specific hues aren't quite right it seems. It may be the pictures, but many of them are all a little too neon (especially the pug chair) rather than just being playfully bright.

How many people would care about this place if it weren't for those damn dogs?

What are the little trees on the dining table? They're cute.

I hate this. Its childish and ugly. I don't understand why its a finalist.

i must say i voted for the pugs. i just want to squish them all (in a safe, loving way of course). but i imagine this place is a lot of fun to come home to, tho not sure i'd ever be able to relax. very invigorating.
