Fall Colors 2006 Finalist #6: Skapes & Hegs Old Texture + New Color

Name: Skape & Hegs
Location: Akron, OH
Type: 1910 Downtown Row Building, studio 1 bedroom, owned
Go to: Skape & Heg's Original Entry

Skape & Heg's favorite OTHER entry:

My favorite is entry #30- "Mary and Ronit's Tree-Lined Railroad". I love the playfulness of the tree drawings! The best feature is the butterly glued onto the wall, as well as the other interesting objects hanging in the room. It's a charmingly odd space with beautiful, nostalgic color.

My husband (Hegs) really loves entry #42- "John & Anna's Old and New Rendezvous". I know he likes it because from the day it appeared on the contest page, he's told me to check it out like 40 different times! While we were renovating our building, I think this is the style he had in mind for our decor. (He also loves the huge painting on their green wall!)

What do you want to do next in your home, if anything, to improve it?:

We want to create a beautiful living space in the back yard. Our time and money was concentrated on the interior of the building, so the back yard looks cold & abandoned. We have a fabulous brand-new deck (images on the video), but we need to breathe some life into it with yard art, bright furniture, and landscaping.

I love all the commentary on your video! Very real & personal. Best one so far.

I second Lynn's comments/questions--I'd also like to know why this was selected as a finalist. Their space seems all right/average, but use of color and overall design doesn't seem good enough for "finalist" status. Even a couple of the "honorable mentions" might be more appropriate, in comparison to this entry.

I liked this entry, although I might agree that "honorable mention" might be more appropriate. I really like your ceilings! I also enjoyed your video with all the personal touches about how you came to live there and what you've done with the place by working with your architect father. Coincidentally, I was also a big fan of "#42- "John & Anna's Old and New Rendezvous"!

I like the space, but don't care for the use of colors. This is another selection that surprises me, but I'll try to reserve judgement until the rest of the finalists are announced.

This does remind me that one of the things that troubled me about the contest this time around is that with so many entries on the 4 different sites, it became very difficult to keep track of the entries and how I voted. I think AT has outgrown its blog format.

It's an interesting experience to envy someone who lives in Akron* but your space is very cool as is your creative approach to living in it. It is not at all my style, but I learned things from your entry. (Among them: ceilings contribute; metal adds color.)

*Note: I am (partly) the product of ancestors who fled from Akron and other places in the midwest so I hope I'm not offending you. A fear of Akron, Dayton and Peoria Illinois was instilled in me with mother's milk.

i, too, would like to know why we (the readers that keep this site oh so popular) voted in the first place? the AT gatekeepers did say that entrants could "campaign" for votes...but now the entries with the most votes are being shorted. so how do our reader votes factor in at all? im not even commenting on the design of the spaces that made the finals, im just asking about the "voting system" we were all supposed to have an "active" role in. i'm very disappointed because i thought all of our votes would somehow matter in choosing the final 10. perhaps they really did tally the votes, and chose the top 20 and then chose the final 10 on their own? i just want to know what happened...this contest isn't fun anymore :(

I really like this happy home and the use of citrus-y pops of color to define areas. I bet that it feels nice and warm in there when it's sleeting, hailing, snowing, etc. outside. I like that this entry doesn't just feel like it's straight from a catalog - it looks like a lot of love and personality went into the place.

P.S. Skapes, I also adore your dog (I have my own much-loved IG :)

see extensive discussion on the voting issue on the blue lagoon entry (so we don't have to rehash it again)

Great story. And you made the table too? Hegs must love hugs with you.

That's a very inspiring story. My girlfriend and I are looking for a building here in Detroit. It's comforting to know that a couple CAN survive something as taxing as a complete rehab. I love your choice of color and creativity. Good luck.

Wow, those sinks are awesome.

I'm surprised this space hasn't gotten more support. It's so distinctive and well-conceived! What's the problem?

I'm sorry you guys didn't place! You deserved better. At least you have the consolation of living in a lovely, well-designed space that is all to your credit.

Thank you for showing your apartment!
