#12- Voyager's Accessorize With Color

Name: Voyager
Location: Overland Park, KS
Type: 3 bedroom home

Why I use color:"I use color because it makes me happy! Currently, every wall in my home is the same color...a warm neutral khaki (not my choice, the house came this way). Until I can afford to completely redecorate, I accessorize with as much color as I can find. When I was shopping for my living room furniture, I found the graphic patterned fabric for the toss pillows before I picked out the sofa. The rest sort of ballooned as time went on. "

2007-10-11Entryway 2.jpg

"The artwork in the photo "Entryway2" (above) is my handiwork, as well as the two toss pillows in the (bottom) photo "Master Bedroom" (latch-hooked out of old t-shirts!), and the 6 colorful images in the "Dining Room" (top photo). My absolute favorite color burst is my main entry hall "Entryway1" (below)."

2 Good color tips:

"Don't be afraid of it!"

"Warm and cool colors can co-exist in a room & look GREAT!"

2007-10-11iving Room.jpg

Favorite type and brand of paint:"For walls, I prefer flat paint, for trim work, a satin finish, but not glossy. I have no brand preference, as I have not yet had the opportunity to paint my home!"

I love the art and the combination of colors: the artwork in the entryway is great. A clear demonstration that you can have color without painting walls.

I like your bedroom. It makes me want to take a nap (that's a good thing). Let's hope you're not the only Kansas Kid representin' (I'm from Roeland Park and submitted my photos a couple days ago)

Personally, I think you did pretty good with the obstacle of the khaki walls. Love the entry way. Love it. Bedroom is on a good start, maybe some more 'thinks' with one color scattered on the furniture? Or artwork?

The dining room looks like it was planned from the getgo.

Keep having fun.

not my style - but that's not important. just not sure why someone who "has not had the opportunity" to paint their home would submit for a color contest.
will be interested in seeing what you come up with, when you do paint.

did you use my dad's home entertainment store from the early 90's as your inspiration???

I get a 90s vibe from this, and I feel like your furnishings are actually competing with the khaki walls. Why can't you paint?

Anyway, I enjoy all your bold artwork, though it's all pretty similar and I think you should mix it up a bit.

Hi everyone! Thanks for all of your comments, I have enjoyed reading them! With all the amazing homes out there, I am pretty surprised that my photos made it to the screen!

To answer a couple of the questions you've asked...

Janella13 - The bedroom is probably the least finished room...WAY too many blank walls yet to be filled!

EeBee - hope your photos are featured! Kansans sticking together!

Johnp - the big obstacle in painting for me is that there is no place to stop! Soft corners & 10 ft ceilings are a major challenge, but maybe someday....(plus I have a devil of a time making decisions!) I entered this contest because what you don't see in my photos is my currently empty finished basement, and it's SCREAMING for a CB2 makeover =)

Suzygirl - the dining room table is made by Elite Mfg.

mmadden - I am always on the hunt for great artwork. Any suggestions?

Have a great day & best of luck to everyone!

To finish my comments...

Personally I think your dining room, bedroom and hallway are "finished". They are very sophisticated and crisp. I love the mix of contemporary with "not so contemporary". You have nerve plus a real sense of balance and line with both color and placement.

Keep working on that living room. It will come together. The direction is great. And I can tell by your taste, you will finish it with confidence. What's the hurry anyway? Continue to shop and add color and appointments as you find them. You probably have to take your time in Kansas anyway. Although I have heard some wonderful things about Kansas.

Johnp, the contest rules do not say that color has to be achieved through paint.

Voyager's entry is called "Accessorize with Color" for a reason. I like this entry because it shows an excellent alternative way of adding bold, beautiful colors to one's home. Many ATers live in rentals where painting is prohibited, so seeing how Voyager has used bold pieces of artwork to add color has inspired me.

Although the living room wall looks lonely and bare, the six large colorful squares in the second photo look terrific.

It's nice to see someone introducing a lot of colour in ways other than just painting all the walls. I think the hallway is pretty awesome colour statement and you can take it with you if you ever move.

It sort of seems like you're working in spite of the walls, carpet and living room furniture, not with them. I do love the entry way. In some parts it looks like the colorful artwork is "overcompensating" for general plainness. Have fun as you develop/remodel/etc.

Fierce competition out there! The entries who seem to be at the top of the heap are the ones who don't necessarily need help from CB2 - they are already absolutely stunning, congratulations to you!

It's all of us "longshots" who are desperately in need of CB2's extensive options!

I think you need a paint job bigtime. The khaki walls really lend a 90's feel to your place when it could seem much more modern if you painted them white. My house also has walls that seem to blend on into the next rooms but if you can imagine drawing an imaginary line where the room should end then paint to that spot it will look great. 10 foot walls are not a big deal with a ladder, so I say go for it.

Has anyone noticed a strange case of morphing (someone changing their screen name online to appear as popular within an online community to appear popular) I'm thinking Robin or Voyager, JenG, ScottPiers, Snowman,

THEY ALL "mysteriously" registered on October 12, 2007 and they ONLY have one post which is "coincidentally" here. lol what a f*cking looser. Get over the 90s, your room is ugly and I so hope you don't win this contest. CHEATER!

I certainly hope that other entrants were not looked over for this one. It seems to me that there should be some sort of minimum standards. The living room alone should have disqualified the entrant. And it is obvious that "scottpiers" is the entrant's mom.

Hi all-
This is my home, so I'll set the record straight...
Voyager=Robin (me)
JenG=friend of Voyager/Robin
ScottPiers=friend of Voyager/Robin (mom? LOL I don't think so!)
snowman = no clue

Wasn't the idea to send a link to friends & ask them to vote? Seems that was the message from AT when I was told my photos would be shown. This would explain why there were several people who registered on the day that my photos appeared.

DJLuckyonline - no need to be rude...(and do your research to determine who "scottpiers" is. Ever heard of Google.com?)

Edina Monsoon - I seriously doubt that I will win anything, as the contest is voted on by the readers, and if you have been looking at the other "Insta-finalist" entries, I don't have a chance in HE**.

Seems that those who will likely win are those who don't NEED the CB2 gift card, because their homes are already lovely.

There never was and never will be anything wrong with the '90's. And I'm not implying your rooms look dated.

My point is, you have made some important investments in nice pieces that will last through time. Don't fall into the "trend hungry" trap when it comes to the "big stuff". Sure you can use "the wall color of the decade" to make things look all trendy, but that's very temporary.

Your most important investments must last for decades. And I believe the choices you have made in this respect will stand up to time.

Voyager this is a contest based on merit, not who needs it the most. If that were the case, some homeless person or colormyworld would get it. CB2 is not going to reward your mediocrity.

Voyager, this is a contest about merit, not whose design is the worst and in need of CB2 the most. Frankly you should just stand by your work. Your explanation for your bad design is well unseemly. Just do better.

To colormyworld:

I love that you are stalking Edina Monsoon. Run her out of Dodge! I hope you make her feel as uncomfortable as she has made others, although I doubt you can. It's hard to teach a sociopath a lesson.

Another person you should set straight is Djluckyonline. Well, I don't think you can set him straight, but at least put him in his place. He truly believes he's royalty. As we all know, royalty does business with stoic grace; which proves he is obviously in training. No grace about that cow. Ok, that was mean. But since I am not exactly petit, I can call the spade what he is.

obviously scottpiers, voyager, SAP (and maybe even more usernames) are one and the same....trying to be crafty posting that link to another site; you must think we aren't very smart....it cheapens the competition and makes you look kind of desperate. Do you and colormyworld know each other? You have a similar design aesthetic and a similar sense of morality.

Personally I'm confused. All these accusations about cheating and morality, and poor taste....

Please remember that Voyagers' photo's were chosen after being screened by the contest committee. Not everyone who submitted photo's were chosen. That alone gives Voyager merit.

And I would think the object of the comments would be for CONSTRUCTIVE criticism, not bashing. So who really are the meritless? I think it's the snipers.

The artwork is too bright. The look is 90's over-stuffed contemporary. The pillows on the sofa are frightening!

All in all, it is indeed very bold. Kudos for daring to be different! I would personally try and tone it down, and maybe mix in some older furniture.

Thanks for the comments Whitespike! Funny everyone keeps mentioning "90s"...seems that could be because that's about the time when I bought the sofa & chair (which, by the way, is the most comfortable thing!).

I was drawn to the pillow fabric immediately (back in the 90's), and yeah, I have to agree that re-doing the pillows could make a world of difference. The big stuff has to stay for now...can't afford to go buy anything.

As for the bright artwork, it's what I love most about my home.

I appreciate your opinion & your suggestions!

I forgiveth thee for calling me a cow. I do not feel like royalty... hell, I don't even pretend to be a designer or have the nicest place in the world (like the person who nominated this room, seriously). IF; BIG IF, you post something publicly, wether it be music, art, blah... for A CONTEST, expect it to be dissected and personally valued. I personally might be wrong, but I'm still PERSONALLY judging it. You right now are personally judging what I'm posting, which is public and which CAN be judged, dissected and valued. Do I care if he cheated? (Even if he did, he didn't win) Do I care if someone thinks I'm too harsh? (They can always skip my post) But I REALLY REALLY care about not compromising what I think is a respectable blog just to be PC. Once you start censoring comments or anything that's not nice, pleasing and proper, you'll end up with the S**T that is HGTV. Yes, you'll have a G rated site, but you'll also end up with a mediocre clientele who REALLY thinks they're royalty and can't be uncomfortable to keep it unbiased. Once this site reaches that stage (which I really hope won't happen soon) I will stop coming here.
