#13- AJ's Box of Crayons

Hello! Monday, Oct. 15 is the final deadline for submissions.

Name: AJ
Location: Cleveland, Ohio
Type: Bungalow

Why I use color:"It's a beautiful thing. I grew up in a white walled house and would dream of the day I could live in a box of crayons."

2 Good color tips:

"Use your instinct - don't do a brown & blue combo just because its in go with what will make you happy"

2007-10-12-nw 037.jpg

"remember white, wood, & silver are colors too and will make all of your other colors appear bolder and brighter"

2007-10-12-nw 039.jpg

Favorite type and brand of paint:"Sherwin Williams (almost always covers in 1 coat) high gloss finish"

I love the aqua and silver and white together. That silver band is amazing. The wood tones do keep it from looking cold.

Very nice placement of the Occasional Cat, as well. He appears to be looking at the hand on the wall and contemplating a leap onto it. It provides a real sense of interesting tension to the composition.

I wish we had better photos so that we could get a better idea of how the entire room works...however, I want to lie down on the daybed beneath the draped fabric, while someone feeds me grapes. This is a good thing.

I remember this etry form last year. I loved it then and I LOVE it even more this time. I want to see more of the apt. The incorporation of the stainless steel on the wall is brilliant.

Whoa! That's what I love about this site. There is always something interesting to look at and then, smack! something I've never seen before.

This is a real interesting design scheme to me. When I think of bungalows I often think of the '50's and that teal, aquamarine kind of color in the kitchens. To me this is a modernization of that look.

I can't believe the luster on that high gloss paint! At first I thought it was an acrylic panel. Are the stripes paint as well?

I second the one coatability of Sherwin Williams-great paint. It better be at $40 a gallon.

The initial photo--very smart, all the lines, especially the chairs and the floor.

TJ2,
I don't remember seeing this home before? Which contest and what was the entry called then? Thanks.

Love those chairs. Are they zebrawood? They're perfection.

Those are Penela chairs - available here:

And I know this because I own them, too - unfortunately, my kitchen is not quite as fabulous!

Good to know about Sherwin Williams - I just did my first coat of paint in the hallway with another brand.

I have one of those wooden hands too, and my cat is equally fascinated by it.
This is the best use of stripes I've seen. Wonderful.

I like all the things mentioned above--and I love the dark-ceiling, gauze-draped, daybed area. With the interesting objects, the silver-striped black fabric, and the fat, mossy-colored pillows, it looks so artfully accidental!

Love your style, furnishings, use of color & accessories.

Question for you AJ- what are those silver bands you edged your white stripe with, aluminium tape?

I think the name you chose is very misleading...I was expecting to find a home with every color of the rainbow...

Your home deserves a better title because it is amazing...I'd love to see more images and to know more about the room that is in the second to last picture...

Hooray for a fellow Clevelander! I remember your home from last year. I loved it then and love it even more now. Great job. I love your colors and the silver added in. Great artwork too. The shot with the day bed and - is that a porch or maybe a sun room? I love the mix of Asian design as well. I want to take a nap there.

Great job. Hope we see you in the finals because I want to see more.

Beautiful - minimalistic - calm. You must be an artistic person - type A personality. Your attention to detail is amazing. What is growing in the planter on the table? I could see a you filling in the white part of the walls with a flat, plum purple paint or black sponged over with white. And tile your floors with black and white and teal tiles. And change the chairs (although cool) to red barstools. And a jukebox where the daybed is. And instead of that ordinary looking art above the table, get some old lp's (records) and nail them to the wall. That will definitely get you a winning entry. Good luck next year.

Aunt Janet -
Your comments are interesting. Plum purple with the aqua and silver? Even black and white sponge with the aqua and silver? That is an unheard of color combination and has so much merit! How unusual and "out of the box"! And to have a 50's theme is something that hasn't been done since the 90's. I'd love to see that come back again.

Good luck with this submission, but I'd love to see you implement some of these ideas. Make sure you post the pics here when you do it.

Thanks P.M.
I always think outside of the box too with colors. Every room in my house is a different color. I did it in the order of the rainbow. The kitchen is red, the dining room is orange, the living room is yellow, family room green, bathroom blue. These rooms all flow in order that way. On the ceiling in the family room, I've painted it baby blue, with sponged clouds and I found a large decal at Holcomb's of a rainbow. It's my Sistine Chapel. I'll definitely be entering next year. Everyone loves my house. Their eyes just about pop out their heads when they see the vibrant colors. The most common word I get to describe it is, exquisite. I'm very proud of myself.

Thank you so much everyone for the comments! Much obliged. About the stainless steel on the walls - It is actually aluminum flashing and I got it in the roofing section of home Depot. Its pretty inexpensive and although easy to cut, hard to do it straight! And if you leave any on your floor its like slipping on a banana peel (even my cat, Leo, slipped up, he was pretty embarrased.) Again, thank you!

Creative, interesting, and exellent color coordination and color complementing. Very calming as well, especially at days end when returning from work.

Interior design well executed! Definetly a winner.
