apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#16- Lauren's Color Tells a Story

Name: Lauren
Location: Dallas
Type: 2 bedroom rented, with roommate

Why I use color:"Color tells a story: this is where Ive been and this is where I am going. Im young and my life is constantly changing as my taste evolves alongside it Color is the easiest way to liven up a run of the mill apartment, to unify all the rooms, yet make each one stand out."

"Having a roommate, the living spaces we share need to reflect both of our styles. Combining a minimalist illustrator and a cluttered designer was going to be a challenge, but it has really helped to simplify and adapt my personal style. Color can be fun, we have a sense of humor about our apartment, and it definitely unifies the space."

2 Good color tips:

"White is a color, and can be a bold statement if used in contrast."

"Color isnt forever, if your taste changes, so can your paint. Be bold, have a sense of humor, and no matter what color you pick, your space will come alive. "

Favorite type and brand of paint:"the cheap kind"

thanks new york, I found it on craigslist for $50 then painted and recovered it! So it ended up costing a tid-bit more than $50 in the end!

I thought that was an Anthropologie sofa. Fabulous job, love the illustrated headboard.

Wow! I haven't really liked any so far then today it seems like the best ones have been posted (on all the AT city sites) LOVE this! It's so creative and young, modern and classic at the same time. Totally my style, just put together much better than my place, haha. Insta-finalist!

lady J, i wish i had the budget for an anthropology sofa... i am fresh out of art school, so i am more of a knock-off artist! I find something i like, then find a way to make it on my own. My roommate likes to think he is minimalist, but really a paintbrush was just more in his price range than a headboard!

I love the illustrations! The headboard is amazing. You've done a great job of reconciling two disparate styles. Hope to see more of this place.

I agree with Tiffany, this is my favorite entry so far, both for style and color use. I covet your sofa and admire your ability to work so well with a roommate.

This place is great!
Did one (or both) of you just paint those illustrations straight on the walls?

my roommate freehanded them on the wall with pencil then went over it with a charcoal grey paint. They are all from original artwork that he has done over the years. It's not in the pictures, due to the limit of 5 photos, but there is also a giant squid painted on another one of our walls. The prints over the sofa are also his. I happen to have a pretty talented roommate... you can look him up... i know im not supposed to post any links... but just google "nathan sanders art"

I really like your place - the wall drawings are unique and fun, and all the other wall art has so much personality. But I don't find the space particularly colorful; it's the objects that grab me here.

Why didn't you just read the rules or wait until voting for your entry was done to post a link? arghhh

Lauren and Nathan,
I would suggest eliminating the picture of Nate's bedroom and uploading one of the photos of the squid painting. Although I appreciate and enjoy the head board, I think the squid photo will have more of an impact and make the collection of photos here stronger.

I'm diggin' on your pad!

haha! thanks mary! I guess it isnt every day that you see a giant squid painted on the wall... but unfortunately not today either. A 5 photo limit put a damper on showing off all of our fun artwork!

lots to like here, but i'm especially fond of the purple bed. like the rest of your place, it's a very successful combination of such different elements

The headboard is so cool I can't believe I've never seen something like that done before. It is just so so cool.

I thought the birdcage was a little contrived, until I noticed they were airplanes, not birds. Well done. Hardwood floors would MAKE this apartment, too bad you probably can't install them since you're renting. Good job though. I might steal that headboard idea until I buy a permanent bed....I too am a recent college grad.

$50 craigslist sofa... white high gloss paint... designTEX storm blue velvet... and a super cheap upholsterer!

reneta... you may want to adjust the color on your computer, because there is no purple bed... but i'm glad you liked it either way!

Kiss ass apartment-- This shows true creativity and sense of design. Is great to see someone not afraid to take some risks and really make a space their own. Cudos to you both. It is not always easy for friends to combine styles.

Wait, so what color are the pillows at the back in the bedroom with the green wall? And what's the background of the duvet? Because the color looks right in all the other photos (wasabi peas are the right color, sofa definitely looks stormy blue, etc.). I know that Ikea pillow has orange stripes or cords or whatever it's wrapped in. But the duvet and back pillows looks purply to me. Maybe I need to adjust my head?

the pillows are brown and the duvet is black, brown, green and orange. But now that i look a little closer i can see where you might get the purple from... I think your head is fine!

Pillows and background on duvet look very, very purple to me.
