#18- Hepburn's Home as Haven

Name: Hepburn
Location: Glendale, WI
Type: Modern, urban, edgy 2 bedroom ranch which I own with my partner

Why I use color:"Because I have to! We could never settle for shades of beige to define our space. Our home is our haven, our solace, so we take furnishing and color to heart. The colors we chose are warm and cozy, yet modern, and mingle well with all the interesting little accessories that we like to litter free space with."

"I'm an artist who paints for fun and small profit after my publishing day-job, and my partner is a fifth degree black-belt and a grad student. We work really well together and have the same taste when it comes to decorating and color palettes, so filling out home with things we love and vivid backdrops to display it make our small ranch house the home it is today."

2 Good color tips:

"Go with your gut....if it feels too bright, it probably is...and take a risk (if you mess up, you can always try again)."

Favorite type and brand of paint:"Behr paint from Home Depot...even out paints more expensive brands I have tried."

i love it. the eccentricity is what makes it work. is that a found branch you're using as a banister or did you purchase it? I have been looking for something similar. If it is a DIY how did you go about preserving the branch?

That is the creepiest toilet seat I have ever seen.

love love love the tilework on the shower! the lime bedroom is a bit overwhelming, though -- what color is the ceiling?

I really like the contrast between the brown/gray in the living room and the blue in the hallway. They work nicely together.

...don't know if I could handle that green bedroom though. Maybe adding more white (as in the framed picture) would do it for me.

You have those zebra striped chairs from cb2 I want! Your place is cool, reminds me of homes in New Orleans. No rules, just what you like, how it should be.

I do agree though that the bedroom is a little much and that toilet seat! But overall a very cool house.

The Buddha toilet seat is just plain offensive.

This space uses color in amazing ways! Okay, I am not into the bathroom's decor elements either, but that's not part of the contest, really. The use of color is fantastic throughout the house. It is hard to get away with that kind of intensity, but in this case I find it highly successful.

After drooling over the organic railing (please share any info, as I need one desperately), the next thing that really caught my eye was the toilet seat. After the great Buddha explosion, I personally think that's the most creative use I've seen. Not to mention the finish is gorgeous.

Overall, this is a gorgeous space. Love the eclectic feel, especially in the kitchen - something about those Moroccan lamps just makes me smile. Lovely.

I don't know, Modfan--WWBD? Probably laugh at it.

At first I thought it was strange and ugly, then it seemed to really fit the shape of the toilet itself and turn it into a sculpture.

I really love most of the color choices. The rooms have a bit much going on for my taste, but I'm impressed, especially with the first photo of the dark walls and the light blue-green in the hallway. My vote on the toilet seat is no, but yes to the rest of the place.

Mixed feelings on every picture: elements I like, esp the brown and aqua plus furniture in the first pic, and the staircase, but there are more than a few things that scare me. Not in an offensive design way, but in a creepy way (the Vincent Gallo-ish pic in the living room, the toilet seat, and the green). I like hte border in the kitchen.

Holy crap, I live in Glendale too! I too, am an artist, but in the film and video field. I can see you are very talented because the eye you have for color and design is awesome! I love the bathroom, and the handlebar in the staircase, and the very bold green bedroom. I don't own my place so I can't even paint the walls... but I decided to hang sheer fabric like curtains along some of the walls instead. Where did you get that toilet seat? Or did you paint it? Do you have a website for your art? If so, please send me a link: avant.garde.film@gmail.com

This isn't my style, but I think it's a great use of color. The stairway is awesome, would love to know more about how you did it. I also love the bright kitchen (and all the lanterns). It's all very creative and a fun entry for a color contest.

Brrrr... that Jesus painting in the living room and that Buddha on the loo are scary. A place full of extremes! Very 'down' living room, very energetic bedroom, very hot kitchen, very floaty stairwell. Wow, you got some stuff to express there! Interesting.

Love the living room, bath, and stairway - really unique and creative. The bedroom is a little monotonous and overbearing for my taste, same with the kitchen. Otherwise very tastefully ecclectic, which is very hard to achieve for most.

I somehow missed this on the first go round so add one more insta finalist to your fan club if not your voting tally. This is gutsy and I'd say you hit your marks. I didn't realize the toilet seat was a Budda until I read the comments, I thought it was a moon face.
