Name: Moca
Location: Dallas, Texas
Type: One bedroom loft
Why I use color:"When I think of the world, I think in composition and color. I am constantly changing my home around to reflect what I think or the colors I want to see together and this is always evolving. If I cannot have what I see right now in color, I paint it, this may be artwork or furniture and I may also cover it with fabric as my mood changes. "
"Being an artist, I use color to tell stories. I think that a home is about the person living in it whether real or the imaginary persona desired for others to view. Understanding color for me is about this discovery and the artistic execution and constant experimentation."
2 Good color tips:
"Working with tonal colors and popping with an intense color like marigold or teal really intensifies the effect of the relationship. Do not be afraid to mix heather grey, charcoal, cream and teal for an amazing effect. Think about how these items are worn in an outfit and you can effectively pull them off in a room."
"I love mixing wood colors and often use them as the color. Do not be afraid to invite the natural object as part of your palette, rather than covering it all up in paint."
Favorite type and brand of paint:"I do not have a favorite brand, it depends on if they have the color I have in my head at that time. "
Sad, cheap looking and most likely VERY expensive. All that art (which is probably self-made) seems like "acquired taste" pieces, which are totally wrong for a "popularity contest" such as this one. All the paper details, and thin fabrics in that space say one thing in unison, "THIS IS A RENTAL AND WE'RE NOT STAYING HERE FOR LONG". Regardless of your living conditions (owning, renting) you could spend a few bucks on lighting. Otherwise, blah.

I love the personal touches, especially the butterflies around the pole. I wish I could see the coffee table in the first picture a little better. Not crazy about the chair in the last picture. It looks like a nice piece, but the cover on it doesn't do much for it.

Woah, Moca, you got djlucked over! That's almost a badge of honor! ;)
I like your cushions and your nice deep wooden chairs in the first and last pictures. Wish I had some like that.
Thanks for sharing.

I love it. And don't listen to any of the haters. Over the years I've been frankly pretty disappointed in the segment of the Apartment Therapy readership that would rather see an apartment decorated in unvaryingly mid-century modern style than appreciate creative, well thought out juxtapositions like yours.

It is not a badge of honor. Best guess is someone will banned before the month is out.
Dear Moca, please don't be upset when you find all these Moroccan gems missing from your home. Also, please don't come to my house and take them back.
The blue lamp: did you stencil that yourself? Your artwork is consistent and interesting. And that silver candlestick...wow! The bookcase is the prize piece. Wish to see more of the LR.
Excellent job!

Would love to know where you purchased that orange and white pillow on your bed...

Moca, I like this, it show individuality and creativity and admirably modest expenditures of money (as if most artists have that choice, speaking from experience.)

oklagirl, that pillowcase is part of an IKEA bedding set (shams and duvet cover). It goes for $20! We started a Flickr group for people who have it.

The flickr group is fantastic Lady J. I'll have to take a picture of my purchased set in a drawer--I loved (so bought it) but have nowhere to use it. I've been pondering figuring out how to cut it into something I can put on stretchers and hang on my wall.

I think you have a good eye and have done a good job mixing your textiles, artwork and furnishings to give personality to plain white walls.

The butterflies are really cheap and I saw them hanging in the wallpaper store made from scraps. I do like the orange dresser alot but your walls are plain jane!

i like how you put color in with your textiles and accessories. i love LOVE the butterflies. i don't think they look cheap but i think it's an inspired look. especially those of us with rentals that don't allow us to paint the walls - i think it's a great idea. and i might just have to steal it.
i think your look is very individual and full of style and i like it!

Love the art and the colors in the art. It would be great to see you pull more of those colors into your decorating. Keep it up.
