Name: Jennifer
Location: Nashville, TN
Type: One bedroom, owned
Why I use color:"I like using color to elicit different emotional reactions in different parts of my home. In the living room and dining area, energizing red keeps the party going, helps me get do 10 extra minutes of cardio, and stimulates the appetite. In the bedroom, cool periwinkle soothes the mind and helps me drift off to sleep. People tell me my home "feels" good, and I think this is because they are responding to the colors."
2 Good color tips:
"Don't worry about matching the exact same shade of white throughout the room. Varying shades of white and cream look pretty together and keep a room from looking too planned and sterile."
"If you're broke and you want a pulled-together look, paint your mis-matched furniture the same color. The pieces will look like they belong together, and no one will know that all of your furniture is from Goodwill."
Favorite type and brand of paint:"I love Benjamin Moore. I recently painted all the furniture in my bedroom with high-gloss black paint, and now I'm obsessed with the glossy stuff. Gotta love that shine!"

your bedroom is great, periwinkle plus black and white. I painted my bedroom green for the same reason, it's the color that relaxes me and echoes the trees in the courtyard. if you're on a tight budget you've got great furniture. especially like the red and the asian piece and eiffel tower in the tablescape. this place is feminine and i can see how your guests enjoy visiting.

Lovely home.
Your bedroom is fabulous.
But the lavender and red in the living and dining rooms just isn't working for me somehow. Maybe it's the orange tinted wood? Theoretically it should work. Maybe you just need better lighting?

Alana, it most certainly seems that the lighting is the culprit.
Beautiful bedroom picture though!

Thank you!! I appreciate all of your comments very much. I've worked hard to make a home that reflects my personality and makes my guests feel welcome. I'm so glad that you can see that.
carolynapplebee, yes I decorated on a VERY tight budget. I'm in grad school and have no money! Everything you see came from secondhand stores, eBay, craigslist, family members' attics, or dumpster diving expeditions.
NYS, the piece over the couch is a Curtis Jere sculpture. I bought it on eBay for almost nothing and I was shocked when I opened the package and saw the signature. I was very lucky; the seller didn't know what it was.
Alana, the wood doesn't look orange in person. But I *do* think you're right--I need to break up all the wood in the living room. When my budget allows, my FIRST priority is a living room rug. I'm hoping for a traditional Persian rug with lots of green and navy, and just a little red to tie it in with the walls.
