apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

#37- Robbie's Bright Cave

Name: Robbie
Location: Richardson, Texas
Type: 600 sq. foot studio loft

Why I use color:"Color gives me the inspiration to be more creative in life. I always choose a color based on how it makes me feel. I don't even care if two colors match in the same room because if they put me in a better mood then I find a way to make them work. Guests always tease me that I waste time and money painting my rented apartments but by they time they leave they are always asking for color tips. I’m a design student so naturally color is important in my space; it helps express who I am and what I like."

2 Good color tips:

"Pick out paint samples that put you in a better mood when you look at them. Bright colors do it for me. I usually pick out colors and set them on the counter and look at them for about a week. The colors I look at the most I set aside until I'm down to my favorite one by the end of the week. Don’t be afraid to paint using a drastic color. Drastic color changes make you fearless about picking and choosing the right color. One thing to remember about paint is that if you don’t like the color just change it. Sometimes for me it takes a few shades of the same color to get the right feeling I was wanting for that wall. "

"Lights really emphasize on the your colors. Try adding accent lights to make your paint stand out!"

Favorite type and brand of paint:"My favorite colors usually come from the Ralph Lauren Collection at The Home Depot. I have Wal-Mart match the color in their inexpensive paint brand. I ALWAYS use flat (matte) paint. There is no reason to spend a ton of money on painting a rental when you have to paint it back white at the end of the lease. "

There's a pistol under the kitchen table. Quick kill George W. Bush!

Holy crap! There really is a pistol under the kitchen island!!! Me thinks someone should have cleaned up a bit before the photo shoot ;-)

Cute place and really nice lighting. The taupe/grey color in the kitchen is really nice with the white cabinets and orange accent.

Of course there's a pistol! It's Texas.

I love this entry. Yet another example of why I now love orange.

Very interesting!

I love the color contrast,

with or without the pistol.

the blue in pictures 2 and 3 look so different, but it's the same wall... which picture shows what is most looks like in person?

For some reason the second blue picture and the last shot showing the green wall look more faded than they really are. They are both very bold colors. The photographer that took the pictures left the shutter open a bit longer on the first green photo...thats why that looks extremely bright.

Hi Robbie,
I love those pillows on your bed, where did you get them?

Also, everytime I have tried to match the Ralph Lauren paints at Home Depot to Behr, they say it is copyrighted. Walmart, good idea!

ps. love the pistol, the ultimate kitchen appliance!! good luck, i voted finalist.

You backlit your headboard! You are my lighting hero!

Please do something about those cords in the kitchen though. They distracted me so much I missed the pistol!

Great colours, too. But I'm not seeing (from these photos) a great use of colour.

I love the orange and the hairy pillows, and I didn't know that was a pistol. Meh, I'm Canadian.

Very courageous for a rental! Kudos to you for putting in the effort. I agree about your kitchen cords... I kept trying to convince myself it was some sort of abstract art just to give you the benefit of the doubt. Still, a really fun apartment!

I too missed the pistol, prob. because of the cord jungle ;. But, is it really a pistol or are you glad to see me?

I can't tell on my screen, but could it be a labeler? Do they have those too in TX?

I really like your place. I like how you turned a rather unspectacular apartment kitchen into something very attractive with a can of orange paint, a pot rack, and a table in the middle. Oh, and a pistol. Inspiring!

Yeah, first thought on seeing the kitchen was "love the orange with the white cabinets!" Second thought was, "gee a handgun." And then I wasted some time trying to figure out what it's resting on--it's own case, I think. I keep seeing the refrigerator open and a man's hand raises a pistol and fires into a cardboard carton of eggs. Scrambled! Texas style!

HAHAH I cant believe the pistol has gotten so much attention! Its actually a Glock, an official police hang gun. The pillows are from Z gallery. Im not sure if they still sell them anymore. Thanks for all the comments!

I love the color selections, they really seem to compliment one another nicely. The orange in the kitchen is wonderful with the stainless steel appliances and the ornate collection of wooden branches really sets this space off. Also the pistol in the kitchen really screams TEXAS. Great Job!

I'm pretty sure this person is probably a cop guys. I think the pistol is OK in that case.

In other news...I can't stand the fact that that blue and green are in the same space (the sleeping area). Besides that this is a GORGEOUS home!

I love the first photo of the bed and green wall. I love the orange kitchen. But I'm not 100% sold on the green-blue-orange combination. I'm trying to imagine standing in that room and seeing all three at once. Perhaps it's just a little too strident all together.

cmcinnyc, I LOVE your sense of humor and outrageous imagination! Your scenario sounds like the start of a 60's spy movie starrring James Coburn!

I like your place a lot, but I'm confused about the colors. I think the bedroom photos (including last photo) are all the same room taken at different times, but the wall colors appear differently in each. ??
