Midwest #1: Christian's Prairie School Palette

christianlouisville092908.JPGName:Christian
Location: Louisville, KY
Type of Home: Arts & Crafts Bungalow (1920's)

fallcolors3.jpgWhat inspired you to use color? Prairie Style Design began in the US in the Midwest. Because of this, Prairie style designers were inspired by all four seasons. I wanted to reference the golds, oranges, reds, and tans. I also to reference the geometric patterns, and elements of nature. I tried to do this in an updated way. The Prairie School was heavily influenced by Asian design. Because of the clean lines of my house I felt the colors, and textures of Asia would work well. The red and caramel color of the living room and dining room (and the pattern on the window treatments) are particularly reflective of this. The green silk curtains in the bedroom coupled with the colorful painting of the Geisha are also reflective of my attempt to create an updated look for a Craftsman-Style home.

Color Tip: Pick a fabric you love first and then choose your wall color

I like the gray but not the black in the bedroom. I don't like either of the ball-fringed window treatments.

I really like the wall color in the living room... so warm and inviting! It looks like your pictures are a little crooked, though!

Very pretty and inviting. Though, I wouldn't look at this home and think Arts & Crafts. Nice job, regardless!

LOVE the chair in the bedroom! Whats up with the kitchen cabinets? Is it the camera or are they different shades of white?

I love the warmth and layers you've got going on in the living/dining rooms. The kitchen and the bedroom stumble a bit - the kitchen doesn't feel as complete as the earlier spaces, and the bedroom doesnt benefit from flash photography. However - kudos for bold choices in both rooms!

Awww cute! Not my style, but definitely cute. The living room looks so nice and cozy, I love the wall color. And the blue/green of the lamps are a nice contrast.

And AT, I'm gonna harp on you in every Fall Colors posting until put some freakin' javascript in these photos boxes! There is NO excuse for having the page RELOAD every time you click on a photo. I'm very disappointed in you, AT. Very.

Christian here. The cabinets in the kitchen are all the same color white...I think it was the lighting. I admit, I am terrible at taking pictures. With no flash they were too dark (even when I tried to light them) and with a flash they didn't look as good.
Oh well. Thanks for the comments

Is that a big towel under the chair in the last picture?

P.S. Sparkle calm down. You're going to have a heart attack over reloading. You know when I was in high school they didn't even have computers so a little reloading isn't that big of a deal to me.

Love the house, love the furnishings, love the style. Only thing missing are plants. Needs some life to bring out that cozy feeling.

Mr. Dangerous,
I had to laught when I read that...I looked at the photo and can see why you would think that. Actually it is a very cozy chenille rug I purchased on sale (I think at DWR) last year.

Stephanie, the coffee table came from a store called Merridian. They had a big sidewalk sale last summer and I got it from the scratch and dent section for $99. The scratch was tiny and underneath so you couldn't really see it.
