Midwest #14: Amie's Personality Reflection

amieentry101008.jpgName: Amie
Location: Chicago, IL
Type of Home: 650 sq ft rental apartment

fallcolors2.jpgWhat inspired you to use color? When I was younger, I wasn't allowed to decorate my bedroom. The white walls and cherry wood furniture just never reflected my personality. When I moved out on my own, it was extremely important to me to be able to personalize my space. Still, I moved three times before I finally put some color in my home!

Inspiration continued: After the end of a rocky live-in relationship, I just needed to claim a space as mine and mine alone. My walls are now gorgeous saturated colors that make me feel like I'm wrapped in a big warm blanket, and the space truly feels like home!

Color Tip: Don't be afraid to just choose a color! There are literally millions of shades, tints, and tones..waiting for the 'perfect' shade may mean never getting color in your home! Go with your gut and choose what you love...I picked the color scheme for my entire apartment from a pillow I found on sale! I was just drawn to it because of the great blues. I didn't even know I liked blue!

Colors Used: Ralph Lauren Silver Cuff Links, Loft, and Shale

fallcolors1.jpgWelcome, everyone, to our Fourth Annual Fall Colors Sharing & Contest. We're looking for the most beautiful & colorful home in the world and sharing all of the great ideas we get with our readers. This year we're amping things up and hoping to do things better than ever. There are two basic phases, the Sharing Phase and the Voting Phase...

1. Sharing Phase - you comment, judges decide

The 40 best, completed entries will be posted on a daily basis for three weeks. You can view them all at anytime via our new, improved contest pages under ALL ENTRIES. During this time your comments are VERY IMPORTANT as our six judges will be choosing 16 finalists from each region based on comments and their own colorful opinion.

2. Voting Phase - you vote til you drop

Starting October 20th, finalist voting will begin on a daily basis through our new bracketed voting system, which will pit our 16 finalists against one another until only one remains. Sound exciting? We hope so.

Best, Maxwell

Amy - You did a great job of warming up an apartment, I would never have guessed it was a rental. Where were all these nice landlords who let tenants paint when I was renting? :-)

Paint first, ask later. :) Looks nice Amie. I too moved many times and just this year in my most recent apt did I get brave enough to paint my rental walls.

i had the same childhood - white wall, cherry furniture, white bedspread and no say about any of it! needless to say, there isn't a single white wall in my house now. (although there is a white bedspread!)

Hi Aimie, such a pretty name! I just think your place looks beautiful! You obviously have good taste and I think your colors are lovely and the furniture blends well with them. (I like your living room especially).

Great job!

Your kitty looks sweet, and happy!

Thanks for the pictures.

i love gray! it's very pretty. my only suggestion would be to add some more lighting b/c the pictures are a little dark.

I love the Ikea panels behind the couch - I think this inspired me to use those same panels for my headboard!

Wow, thanks for the nice comments!!

Oh Marie, you have no idea how right you are :) I am desiring a lamp for that far corner like crazy, but finances don't allow it yet...The lighting I do have casts a really nice cozy glow at night in person, but I had a heck of time getting the pictures to show up right with that lighting. I get no natural light to speak of during the day, either, which made those photos even darker because everything was backlit! I just couldn't win :)

Sarcelle, that is actually West Elm's Floating Coffee Table!

Awww I inspired someone!!! Yay Laurie :)

Love your color choices! Looks very sophisticated and makes the rooms look cozy. Those kitties are lucky to live in such a nice home..and by the looks of it...they seem to know it too!

If the photo where the kitty's eyes perfectly match the pillows wasn't intentional, it should have been. So cute!

I think that your color choices are very refined and sophisticated. My only criticism is that the extreme lack of clutter makes your photos feel a bit staged- like this is a photoshoot from a West Elm catalog. As your budget permits you should add some more personal and quirky accessories like that darling piggy to make it look and feel more homey.

Hoote, I've actually been thinking of where to put another shelf or slide in a bookcase just so I can have space for all the little accessories! I find so many cute little things that I just don't have a spot for, and it makes me sad. Since it's a smallish apartment, I'm so anti-clutter...even a toothbrush on the counter drives me to distraction. I do have a bamboo plant and a gorgeous little silver table clock with a bright blue face in the living room that somehow managed to stay out the photos :(. My bedroom still has plenty of room to grow, though! I'll work on that and maybe show off some new pics for Smallest Coolest next year :-D

Sarcelle, I'm not certain, but I think that coffee table is from west elm.

I love the nature inspired textiles and cool colors.
Also, I used to work at West Elm, I have a bad habit of recognizing furnishings posted here, or in other people's homes. Love that Adjustable Metal Floor Lamp in Brushed Nickel. See? It's a curse!!

Very cute place!
