Midwest #8 - Jas' Personal Harmony

jasentry100708.jpgName:Jas
Location: St. Louis, MO
Type of Home: Condo

fallcolors2.jpgWhat inspired you to use color? I use color in my home because it’s part of who I am. To me, colors are a lot like music. You can use a pale pink like the peaceful sound of a flute, a bold red like the blare of a trumpet, or a deep purple like the cool sophistication of an alto sax. You can compose your personal harmony by choosing the right colors.

Inspiration continued:I was inspired to use a variety of colors in my home to make me feel like I’m in my own private retreat; that’s what your home should really evoke. Each color was chosen to represent a specific atmosphere that I wanted it to provide, including romance, quiet sophistication, tropical, serenity, warmth, etc. That means, by having a colorful home, I never have a dull moment. Each room has it’s own distinct personality.

Color Tip: The best tip I can provide is, “Don’t be afraid of color!”. Although different colors affect people in different ways, there’s always an affect. If you like hot pink, go for it! If that’s the color that’s going to inspire you to accomplish great things everyday, then that’s the color you need to have in your home. Your home is the one place where you should feel free to express the true you. Instead of worrying about what the next buyer or weekend dinner guests will think about your red, white, and blue living room, worry about who you truly are and what those colors (any colors) mean to you. The added bonus of adding color is that it can easily be changed or taken away.

fallcolors1.jpgWelcome, everyone, to our Fourth Annual Fall Colors Sharing & Contest. We're looking for the most beautiful & colorful home in the world and sharing all of the great ideas we get with our readers. This year we're amping things up and hoping to do things better than ever. There are two basic phases, the Sharing Phase and the Voting Phase...

1. Sharing Phase - you comment, judges decide

The 40 best, completed entries will be posted on a daily basis for three weeks. You can view them all at anytime via our new, improved contest pages under ALL ENTRIES. During this time your comments are VERY IMPORTANT as our six judges will be choosing 16 finalists from each region based on comments and their own colorful opinion.

2. Voting Phase - you vote till you drop

Starting October 20th, finalist voting will begin on a daily basis through our new bracketed voting system, which will pit our 16 finalists against one another until only one remains. Sound exciting? We hope so.

Best, Maxwell

I saw the ghost, too. I think it flew up the drain.

Um, this house looks like a showroom.

SourApple, I thought the same thing. The colors are very nice, but I don't get the feeling of "home" when I look at the photos.

Nice, but very "Designed to Sell".

How come this contest doesn't get the same adventurous and quirky entrees that the Small Cool contest gets? None of these entrees really made me think, "wow, this person is really weird...it warms my heart." More like, "wow, you painted a wall."

Ditto whytephoenix! This home is both striking and subtle. Nothing is over the top, it's just beautifully done. I think the homeowner(s) chose the right mix of colors. It doesn't matter that they don't have loud colors, because that may not reflect who they really are. Yellows and reds don't necessarily make EVERYONE happy (though I like those colors too). For this homeowner, maybe striking and subtle is more like it! :-)

Strong personality - I like this !!!
But I think that lacks unity between all rooms.

i looove the blue lampshade lamp.

we used the same color combo of orange/ blue/ brown for our living room and i'm very happy with that. the only dilema i ave is picking out the right color of curtains to go with the orange walls and the brown furniture

awww I do like this home, but all of the staging kind of dampened my enthusiasm. It feels 'homey' in the way that a well staged model home feels 'homey'..looks really nice but you are still afraid to sit on the sofa lest you rumple it and the greeter yells at you (yes..happened...to me). At least there isn't any fake fruit :) I appreciate seeing things from stores I frequent like the Pier 1 lamp!

Love the copper and blue combo! But the rest of the house feels very stagey and overly thought out. The rug in the living room could be replaced with something much more unique and creative. The house needs something just a little out of the ordinary to break it free of the expected harmonies.

Thanks for all the comments thus far. I guess I should be in the business of home staging, according to some of the comments. :-) I’m a best foot forward type person, so did I clean up and arrange things before the photos were taken? You bet I did! As the saying goes, “to each his own.” Sometimes pictures can tell you everything and sometimes they tell you only what the photographer wants you to know. :-) Trust me when I say, I believe a house is all about being comfortable. The house is definitely lived in and guests always feel at ease. And I promise, I wouldn’t yell at you **amiencc** for using the sofa as, well, a sofa. LOL :-P

I absolutely love it! All the different colors and styles of rooms remind me of a trendy bed and breakfast. Jas, let me know what time check-in is and I'm there...haha. Don't worry about the "staged" comments. The contest isn't about cleanliness or clutter (some people would've been disqualified already). It's not even about if someone else could live there. It's about use of color! You get it and you'll be getting my vote if you move on.

Lily, you are absolutey right when you say this is a contest about use of color, not about decorating, design, clutter, or anything else. I think it's easy to forget that, since we look at a room as a general whole and analyze it in regards to our own personal taste. It's tough to remember to pull out the elements on their own.

I am waiting for my space to be posted and I KNOW I'm going to get slammed for my big ugly cat-scratched sofa sectional! I just hope that the colors I chose around it help me move on to the next bracket, since it's not a couch contest :) LOL But I will be voting for this one to move on! I still love Ja's use of colors :) OH WAIT! Maybe I shouldn't say that....Ja is in my bracket!! haha!

The emphasis is on color in this contest and this is a great entry, but I think that you cannot fault an entry because it has so very much MORE going for it than just color! Photo shoots do or at least should inspire de-cluttering, and this person did an amazing of that.

By the way... ya know... the whole Apartment Therapy book and the entire DNA of this site is about NUMEROUS aspects of having a workable, practical, beautiful home situated within a small space and color is a big part of that, but de-cluttering is one of the hardest ones to accomplish, and this entry manifests that very well.

and overall beautifully laid out! 10/10!

Amazing but magazinish (new word) looks like an interior decorator came in. Lacks homey feel. It feels like a showcase house.

I very much like the face and hand sculpture in the first photo. It reminds me of a piece of art I DIDNT BUY years ago ... and regret to this day. Can you provide any information on yours so I can begin my search again?
