Midwest #9: Nicole's Color Theory

nicoleentry100708.jpgName: Nicole
Location: Chicago
Type of Home: Apartment

fallcolors4.jpgWhat inspired you to use color? As a graphic designer, I've always had an interest in color and color theory. I'm a firm believer that color can make all the difference in deciding the mood of a home, piece of artwork, design, etc. I like carry that part of my work into my daily life as much as possible.

Color Tip: Using complementary colors in off-shades can work wonders.

fallcolors1.jpgWelcome, everyone, to our Fourth Annual Fall Colors Sharing & Contest. We're looking for the most beautiful & colorful home in the world and sharing all of the great ideas we get with our readers. This year we're amping things up and hoping to do things better than ever. There are two basic phases, the Sharing Phase and the Voting Phase...

1. Sharing Phase - you comment, judges decide

The 40 best, completed entries will be posted on a daily basis for three weeks. You can view them all at anytime via our new, improved contest pages under ALL ENTRIES. During this time your comments are VERY IMPORTANT as our six judges will be choosing 16 finalists from each region based on comments and their own colorful opinion.

2. Voting Phase - you vote till you drop

Starting October 20th, finalist voting will begin on a daily basis through our new bracketed voting system, which will pit our 16 finalists against one another until only one remains. Sound exciting? We hope so.

Best, Maxwell

for me, the reds and oranges with the vintage objects make it feel cozy and familiar, and then the blues and greens keep it from feeling too antique. i like it!

Great job making the apartment look like a home. I'd love to live here! I'm really impressed that the bathroom looks so cohesive, considering its size and the limitations one has in trying to make an apartment bathroom look relaxing and homey. Very refreshing!

That vintage can reminds me of Jasper John's work. Love the orange and blue combo in the bathroom. I love the vintage feel of your home. Nicely done.

BEAUTIFUL!!! I love the unique color combinations. It's refreshing to see time spent on making them work as opposed to having picked the color combination of the week from any design store. My favorite for sure!

Beautiful, Vibrant Fall Colors! The apartment looked so homey, cozy and relaxing--definitely a place you would want to hurry home to each day after a long day at work. I love the vintage touches that you used throughout the apartment. You do justice to your career choice! Great Job!

This apartment says "come on it, sit, relax, enjoy the simple things in life". Using both vintage and modern gives it a mix of simplenes and curiosity. I love the colors and the way the sun shines in to make it even more inviting. Great job in decorating and making it a lovely home. Maybe I can hire you for my own interior designer. Love it, simply love it!!!!!!

I love these colors. Looks like a very interesting coffee table! Like others have commented, great use of the vintage clock and coffee can. I like the use of plants to add a living touch. All nicely integrated and beautiful without being too matchy or stuffy.

There is a subtle use of color here, which is playful but also sophisticated. She also placed furniture and plants in a way that works with natural light, so that a relatively small living space looks totally comfortable. Good job, Nicole! I couldn't be surprised, though, you number one designer, you!

i love the complementary blue and orange in the bathroom.. the bright orange goes beautifully with the pale blue. i also love the basic blues, and greens in the illustrations on the wall above the couch. they connect well with the green pillow, the plant on the coffee table and the grey couch. the yellow in the bedroom really brightens up the room and makes it look warm and cozy :)

I really love the warmth in your color palette - and the nice mix of clean contemporary with touches of antique. You inspire me to rethink my decorating!
