Flickr Finds: Art and Chel's Hibiscus Margarita

If this margarita with hibiscus and lime garnish tastes as good as it looks...we want the recipe! We think there's nothing like a fresh margarita on a hot summer night (and we mean with freshly squeezed lime juice, not "the mix"). We searched online and found a recipe for the Jamaica (Hibiscus) Margarita. Read on:

From the "Agave Pimp" (?!) online at The Agave Lounge:

INGREDIENTS:

* 2 shots of chilled Agua de Jamaica (recipe below)
* 1 shot Tequila Tezn Blanco
* shot of simple syrup
* juice from 1/2 a lime
* lime wedge for garnish

PREPARATION:

1. Pour the Agua de Jamaica, tequila, simple syrup and lime juice into a chilled cocktail shaker filled with ice.
2. Shake well.
3. Strain into a chilled margarita glass.
4. Garnish with a lime wedge.

Agua de Jamaica (Hibiscus):

* 2 cups (2 oz) jamaica flowers
* 3/4 cup granulated sugar (more if desired)
* 6 cups water

1. Bring the water to a boil.
2. Add the flowers and sugar and stir continuously while the mixture boils for one minute.
3. Pour into a noncorrosive bowl and steep for 2 hours. zSB(3,3)*Note- this flower will stain so do not use a bowl that will stain.
4. Strain the mixture through a sieve, pressing on the flower solids to extract as much liquid as possible.
5. Taste for strength and sweetness. If it is too potent, add water. If it is too tart, add sugar.
6. Cover and refrigerate until time to serve.

YUM.

Any other interesting margarita recipes??

In SF, we fell in love with the hibiscus margarita, the Tatu, here http://www.bissapbaobab.com/menu.html. Especially during happy hour!

How about a Chelada, a beer-garita cocktail! Miller is making The Chill, but fresh is always better!

Simple recipe:
pint glass filled with ice
bottle of Beer (Corona, Pacifico.....)
1 whole Lime cut into 4 wedges- squeeze juice out and drop fruit into glass
Salt - about 5 shakes over top of glass, add more as needed
Drink!

Lost count of how many years it's been since I started drinking my beer with lime and salt in it :-). Anyone tried beer with green olives? Tasty, as long as you like green olives!

Haven't tried the olives, but I'll give it a go. When I was asking someone if anybody actually drinks clamato they told me they mix it with beer. Sounds kind of good.

Yep - done that one, too, but I prefered the olives (when I lived in Bullhead City everyone called it a "Bullhead beer" - ask the old-timers about the Tiki Bar) until I started using limes. About the only time I don't is when I spend the extra money for Harp.

I meant to ask earlier if you can use the flowers right out of your garden (provided you haven't pesticides on them) or if you need to purchase them specially somewhere??

Yeah, we use the flowers right off of the bush. The interesting thing about hibiscus is that it will continuously produce flowers every day throughout the season. But the flowers will only last one day and then they will drop them. So the fresh flowers make a nice garnish and the dried flowers can be used for juice or tea. We "harvest" the dropped flowers every day and put them on a little plate to dry out.

Thanks for the info. I'll have to check the local nursery to see if they'll grow here. I think they're a lovely flower - there's a lady in Pismo that has one (several?) that was (a couple of years ago) about 4 feet high and 5 feet long just covered with yellow ones. Gorgeous!!
