Flickr Finds: DIY Cat Scratch

090208-catscratcher.jpg Earlier today AT:LA showed you the Itch Cat Scratch Pad. Within a few comments we heard the small roar for a DIY version. Ask and ye shall receive; we found this photo on Flickr of a great DIY cat scratch. Click through the jump to learn more about how it's done!

This scratching post is made from an unused IKEA shelf, FLOR tile samples (snagged from Design Within Reach), carpet tacks and a liberal application of catnip.

This could be easily done with many objects around your home. From that old picture frame in your attic, to the leftover trim pieces in your garage; don't be afraid to use what you already have. Happy constructing!

Thanks Philissa (an avid AT reader as well!), great idea!

great idea!! i heard that using carpet on a pet's scratching post isn't a good idea cause it might get too confusing for them.... what carpet to scratch and what carpet not to.

littlejex: ...hence the catnip. Or so I suspect.

My cat would still rather use my IKEA couch. Can you blame him though? I think it's his way of shaming me for not having sprung for something from CB2 :(

Ooh, I like the idea of using FLOR. I'm assuming that, in general, a cat would be able to differentiate between a nice comfy, angled scratching area that is pretty colors and set aside for him, and the flat normal carpets that are less comfy to scratch on. Plus it most certainly differentiates between your furniture and his scratching area.

And I'm sure the catnip reinforces that rather well. :D
