A talented Chicagoan out there (flickr name t8_1974, to be exact) has done a huge rehab of a two flat in Edgewater. It's a beautiful job - we like the strong neutral paint choices used thoughout and love the wall of mosaic tiles in the kitchen. The owner was kind enough to share the
flickr set of the project by tagging it "apartmenttherapychicago".
Here's what they had to say about what must have been a lengthy undertaking: "This is a soft rehab of an Edgewater Glen 2 flat. The place was in need of major TLC. Projects include painting every surface, landscaping, duplexing into the basement and gutting the kitchen."
We've included some of our favorite "after"s below the jump:
"
I am trying to figure out how to bring more interest to the wall with the entertainment center. I am thinking about flanking it with framed wallpaper (to add interest and color). Also,, I am not happy with the black and white photos over the couch and am thinking about a large piece of art (to bring color) or possibly a funky bark mirror from Anthropologie. Finally, I am still looking for a cool coffee table and have my eye on a new one from Williams Sonoma Home."
"
I sunk the fridge into the bedroom closet and gave the remaining pantry to the bedroom closet. I am thinking about replacing the bar with cabinets eventually."
Thanks t8_1974 for tagging your photos!
Done a fantastic job! What a beautiful home.
Wow! Such great work and A LOT of it too, it seems. The end result is really hundreds of times better, in EVERY room.
Pssst, AT - The ENTER SLIDESHOW link isn't working...
Fixed the link - Thanks, Jessica!
This is breathtaking! So sophisticated. I'm drooling over the kitchen!
Yar, that there kitchen be sexy!
I would LOVE that sunporch office room...so much.
Really beautiful! Lovely color choices and everything seems scaled perfectly! Kitchen tiles are drool-worthy. I must ask where those lucite lamps in your dining room came from! I think I'm in love with a light fixture...I'm swooning.
I love the colors....it's masculine but still very warm. It's very Room & Board too.....
Any chance you can source the paint colors for us? In particular, the dark grey in the hall and the light grey in the living room, etc.
Thanks...Matt
Beautiful.. but is the fridge in a totally different room from the kitchen? How does that work?
I love the color grey in the living room, dining room, etc. can you tell me what color and brand you used?
I have a similar sunroom but have been hesitant to turn it into an office for fear of clutter taking over. Where did you get the desk?
Love it! You mentioned that you're looking into what to do around the entertainment center in the LR. Have you thought of a full wall of framed art? Just various pieces in different frames sort of jigsawed together? I love that look and it seems to always open up spaces, and you can mix art that you love with photos of loved ones, or vintage prints. It's a nice alternative to a painted accent wall.
And I'd definitely go with the the Anthro mirror over the sofa. I just got one and it can pull a room together on a wall all by itself!
It's really a remarkable improvement. Tile work gives it a real modern, clean finish. Warm colors, well balanced rooms. This person has great taste. The only thing that bugged me was the one end table by the couch was in middle of the hallway. If they moved the couch and both tables toward the wall, it would open that up.
WOW. That is fantastic! I love the sunporch desk, but I also love the other desk with the great hide rug underneath. I love how there are not a ton of knick-knacks everywhere too...they're making me want to purge, and that's very hard to do! :)
I'm in love,
I would love to get my hands on that paint schedule.
Gorgeous. I'd love to know where to find the rug in the office and the hallway chandelier. Will you share?
Yes - the paint color please! I am just about to paint my office/guest room a grey and would love to know what you did -- very sophisticated color. Thanks!
Geez, I don't mean to be a pill (obviously it was a ton of work) but it looks like a Pottery Barn catalog. So sterile, with no personality. Though I like many of the things they've done and pieces they've chosen.
Where is the grey upholstered chair from in the living room?
The windows in the office are really nice. Lines like that always remind me of Wright and Prairie Houses and they are so Chicago.
This place rocks....as for the statement that it looks cold...like a Pottery Barn catalogue....WHAT???
PB wishes its stylists were half this talented.
A favorite layout in my favorite neighborhood. It doesn't get much better than this..
just love the dining room table - source please?
Wow! What talent... I love it! The crystal lamps and the desk...may I ask where you purchased them?
Calling this 'Pottery Barn' says more about the critic than the project.
I'm curious to know what paint you used in the
hallway.
I'm very impressed both the scale and outcome of your effort. Congratulations, and enjoy!
Love it!! The tile work in the kitchen is making me drool!
Go Edgewater!! Woo!
Re Hazel's comparison to Pottery Barn, why all the angst from others about that comparison? C'mon, let's be honest here - every piece of furniture or lighting fixture in this very nicely-done rehab could be right off the pages of PB or Rest Hard. Why does everyone take that as a knock?
The decor is not edgy but it is warm and comfortable and possibly still a work in progress and most likely suits the owner so give it a rest.
I enjoy the home slideshows on this site and I'm from Chicago but I'll be the first to say that 80% of the slideshows on the Chicago AT are fairly conservative. It is what it is.
Matt
Hey Everybody,
Thanks for the nice comments. We fell in love with this place and debated a year before electing to leave our pristine condo and take this on.
To respond to a few comments: The fridge is in the kitchen on the wall opposite the stove. We sunk the fridge into the bedroom closet (which is on the opposite side of that wall) and then gave the old kitchen pantry to that closet.
The dining room lamps are from Z Gallerie. The dining room table is Room and Board. The small chandalier in the entry is from Crest Lighting on Sheffield. The blue-gray chair in the Living Room is from Urbanest in Andersonville.
The kitchen and downstairs office paint color is Benjamin Moore Edgecomb Gray. It's my favorite. It looks very warm, but not too beige/blah, and it goes with everything. I'm likely going to repaint the living room, as I just don't think it's working with my stuff. It's Benjamin Moore Baltic Gray (#1467). The dining room is Benjamin Moore Willow Creek (#1468). The entry hallway is BM blue note (#2129-30).
To Hazel, I'm always struggling to make the space interesting and a little different. My taste tends toward the more traditional, but I've begun to bring in some modern influences. I do love Room and Board, and the way they mix modern and traditional classics. I am not a big PB fan actually.
I love home, and I love this site. I'm always thinking of what I can do to improve. I hate the chair in the sunporch, and I want to replace it with an Eames lounge when my budget allows. We also want to update the bathroom (it's still in a before state). We've only been here six months, and we are tired.
BTW, everybody should check out the store, George Lowell, on Lincoln Avenue in Lakeview. It's so awesome, and I don't think it's getting the foot traffic it deserves. I believe he does interior design consulting, so eventually, I might get him to help with re-thinking the living room (colors/accent pieces/etc.). That is the area that is not quite working for me right now.
Thanks again. Love this site.
Also, the desk on the sunporch came from Tom's Price. It's somewhat boring, but fits the space well and hides all the clutter.
The desk in the downstairs office came from Scout, a fantastic store in Andersonville. The cowhide rug, while costing hundreds of dollars in most design stores, was a steal on Ebay.
I'm very open and excited to hear all ideas about the space and how to improve areas.
I was invited to a party in this apartment and it is even more beautiful when seen in person.
This is absolutely beautiful!! I have been looking for something similar to this for months now for inspiration for my home and have failed to find any as perfect as these! You have done an amazing job at putting it all together!! Fabulous!!
Wow - that's an amazing makeover. So lovely - I love the wall colors and what they've done with all the built-ins. Fantasico!
I know this entry is pretty old but I had to comment because I think I have that exact same carpet as the one in your living room and I'm currently trying to decide on paint colors for my LR and adjacent DR. I have been agonizing for years over the perfect beige and whether I should go grayer or warmer. Did you ever repaint your living room? I love the kitchen paint color and especially the hallway.
