apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Flickr Finds: Kathryn's Bathroom Renovation

Before and (a Wow!) After. Long time reader and good friend of AT Kathryn just completed a big project, a gut rehab of her guest bathroom, with gorgeous results. She took the look of the room from "mish-mash" to modern luxe simplicity...

A few of the big changes and up-to-the-minute design choices that Kathryn made:

  • Glass enclosed walk-in shower replaces a curtained tub
  • A modern wall hung dark brown vanity with a minimalist boxy sink by Suneli replaces the marble topped, oval basin sink and white cabinet vanity (our favorite change)
  • The new faucet is the Hansgrohe Axor by Philippe Starck
  • A generous niche was built in to the shower area to hold products
  • 12x12 Italian tiles were used on the floor and walls with a strip of bronze accent tiles as a decorative finish
  • A super streamlined mirrored medicine cabinet provides storage without bulk

Check out the full renovation set here, which Kathryn kindly tagged with "apartmenttherapychicago" when she uploaded to flickr. And to see more of Kathryn's home, click here for tour of her loft.

Thanks for sharing and congrats on a job well done, Kathryn!

the new bathroom is lovely. i have a similar bath to her before picture, in the sense that it's pretty traditional looking and newer but not brand new and in good shape, but i don't know if i could personally justify the expense and thought of throwing a lot of decent stuff into a landfill just because it wasn't the perfect style.

did anything get reused from the first bathroom? it looks like even the plain white toilet was replaced! or is that first picture deceptive and the bathroom was pretty beat up?

Looks excellent. Could you post a bit of information about the dimensions of the room? We're trying to figure out how to make a new 3/4 bath work, and from what I can see, your floorplan and vanity choices might really help us. Thanks!

    Hi all,

Thanks for the kind words on my recent project!
This was my very first renovation after living here for 6 years and I am already planning two more projects.

    In response to the questions:
The bathroom is 6' x 8' (and looks much bigger now, without the tub!)

The bathroom wasn't "beat up" so much as it was just ugly and not functional for my lifestyle (i.e., the walk-in shower just makes more sense for me than the tub, especially since i have a tub upstairs in the master bath). I replaced the toilet with a more efficient, water-saving version.

The medicine chest is a Robern and it's probably my favorite thing (after the new faucet). It is 24" x 30" and mirrored on both the inside of the door as well as the back of the cabinet. Unfortunately, we were not able to do a flush-mount, but Robern has a side mirror kit that we applied to make it look better. I'm planning on getting two more of these for my upstairs bathroom.

    Thanks,
    Kathryn

BTW - I wanted to post a quick review of the various online merchants I used to buy the fixtures:

    A :
The Bathroom Sink Faucet Superstore (Hansgrohe Axor Faucet)

    All Modern Lighting (sconce)

    C:
    Lowcostplumbing (Hansgrohe toilet roll)

    F:
HansgroheInStock.com (Hansgrohe towel bar) -- avoid using this online retailer!!!

It's gorgeous!!!! Where did you get the dark brown vanity the sink is sitting on? Same place as the sink? Thanks!

I got the vanity (which comes with the sink, but not the faucet) at Homemaker's Supply, located at 3415 North Drake Avenue Chicago, IL 60618.

Homemaker's is a great place to look for reasonably-priced fixtures, etc. They discounted everything I bought between 30-40%. Highly recommended.

Looks great, but hey, the first one is ultra chic compared to what I've been living with!

It is lovely and is pretty much what I want to do - but my hesitation is whether this will look "dated" after a few years. Doing a gut rehab of a bathroom in Manhattan is hugely expensive - so I keep thinking I should do something a bit more classic than the sink/cabinet solution.

    d in dc:

The tiles are the Altaj line from Ceredisa. Regular ceramic, no sealing or other special handling required.
