Flickr Finds: Olivia Leigh's Bedroom Wall

032007olivia.jpg

Olivia Leigh has been handpainting her bedroom wall. The final result: stunning! She writes:

Wooo. I finished the wall this morning, and I am quite pleased with it. It's a little more "snowy branches" than my original design, but I'm still quite happy with it. This is a huge wall, probably 10x10, so it took a good while. I might add another strand from the bottom left, but I tend to prefer odd numbered sequences. I still need to move the bed back to the wall and add my pendant and ambient lights, so I'll post a final (better) picture when I'm done...Wall is more of a dark eggplant. The strands are actually a pearlescent light blue, not pure white.

We bet the eggplant and pearlescent light blue colors are especially incredible in person. Thanks for sharing, Olivia Leigh!

Wow, thanks for the lovely comments, everyone. It's so nice to receive positive feedback!

For those wondering, the "eggplant" (it's more like brown with a slight purple tint) is Behr's Spanish Raisin.

That color combo is both lovely and mysterious. Well done!

Nice and clean job. Looks great, Olivia.

Did you use some type of the template, tracing or similar method in creating these snow strands or all of it was done free style by hand?

This looks perfect as it is, the sparseness and lightness are like visual poetry. I thought they were some kind of 3 dimensional decorations when I saw it, they look they have a lot of depth.

Wow. This is sublime. I can't wait to see it with your ambient light! I have the cutest lamp that looks like moonlight that would look great in their.

I think you are done, though, I don't think you need another branch. That is my preference, though, because I tend to enjoy asymmetry. Also, perhaps that corner is for your lamp!

I also love your blue vases. I would love to see the rest of your place.

Thanks again, everyone. I'm really happy with it. I'm sort of half-heartedly working on the Cure plan, and with this design and all media taken out of my bedroom, I'm sleeping better and loving my space more than ever before.

Alex--The design was freehand, for the most part. The only thing I used to assist was a plastic stencil with a variety of circles on it to get the outline of the circles (as I actually have a ridiculously unsteady hand).

And yes, after pushing the bed back, I realized that leaving it as is was the way to go.

I'd definitely recommend trying to do something similar if you like the look. It's actually pretty easy (although time-consuming), and fairly fool-proof. Plus, if you use a dark colour, you can easily paint over if you make mistakes (as I did a few times).3

This is just so beautiful - colors, design and scale. I have been dying to use this eggplant as one of my dining room colors (thanks for referencing it - everything else I've seen was "off"), but so many people have tried to talk me out of it. This definitely convinces me I should dive in and do it.
