apartment therapy changing the world, one room at a time

Flickr Finds: Palisacat's FLOR Door Mat

20080305mat1.jpgLast week, our post on felt coasters took a turn into FLOR country. The comment thread ended with us finding Palisacat's door mat, made entirely of FLOR samples.

Paliscat (or bipolarbear, as she's known in the AT community) tells us about another way she uses these handy carpet squares after the jump.

20080305mat6.jpgI also use them as trivets for warm things like serving bowls you don't want to sit on a table without protection.

FLOR provides six 6" sample swatches for only $5. Order up and tell us how you you use them.

Thanks for tagging your door mat pic with "apartmenttherapy," bipolarbear. Double thanks for the great DIY idea!

I'm sure the Flor people are ecstatic you are basically using their free samples for all your home design needs.

Patrick, the samples aren't free. As Jennifer posted above, you pay $5 for 6 samples.

I've done the same thing. I love the patchwork of colors it makes as a doormat. I had so many sample from when I was picking out rugs for my family & dining rooms. They don't go to waste.

Patrick -

They're not free. They're $5 for a six-pack. Flor is still getting paid, and if you did the math, you'd probably find that covering an area the size of that doormat with regular Flor tiles would cost you about the same. Thing is, regular Flor tiles are something like 12" square, whereas these are only 6" square, and therefore better suited for making small pieces like doormats.

Flor tiles are 19.7"

I'm thinking of sticking floor tiles to the inside of my entrance door to create some sound absorption.

Um, that $5 covers shipping folks.

We see that Patrick is being bitter. I love what you have done with the samples. I really like Flor...I hope that they have a clearance on some of there older patterns. Get DIY!! Thanks for the idea.

Well, don't shoot the people using them--if Flor doesn't want people to order them to use this way, they should charge more (and refund at time of purchase), or limit the number. (Which they may start doing if people are ordering them to carpet their houses!)

I'm not bitter. I'm just not a huge fan of working the system in a way that (potentially) jeopardizes the existence of the service for those who respect the offer.

And if you are using the samples left over from a project, more power to you. No problemo there at all.

If you are ordering the free samples to avoid the cost of their actual product, shame on you.

Btw Christine, they do both. They do refund the fee against future purchase, and they limit the samples you get for the $5 S&H.

They also recycle their own tiles, so another option would be to send 'em back when you're done.

No idea this would be controversial! No harm was done to FLOR: I was just finding creative ways to use the leftover samples after looking into rug options for the living room.

Patrick... do the math.

19.7" x 19.7" = 388.09 sq. in.

Since the tiles go for anywhere from $6.99 to $24.99/tile, lets for the sake of argument say the average is $16/tile, although truth be told, most of them hover around $12.

6" x 6" x 6 = 216 sq. in. = $5, so the sneaky ones who are tiling their whole floor using this method (and ruining everything for you and good folks like you) would be getting the equivalent of a full sized Flor tile for $9. And saving on shipping to boot!

However, do you really think that Flor didn't consider this when they created this program? Do you really think they are that dumb? Seriously? Maybe these are remnants in the production of full sized Flor tiles that they would normally throw away, and maybe oh maybe, the income generated from new customers that place orders as a result of this program is well worth any creatives making a trivet out of a sample.

*sigh*

Thanks so much for the helpful math lesson. But that's sooooooooo not my point.

BIGGER *sigh*

Patrick,

I got your point :-) and I totally agree with you. It would be great if Flor did offer tiles in smaller sizes for smaller projects. However, I can appreciate the fact that they do offer free samples, especially for those of us who intend to purchase full tiles. Next thing you know people will try to upholester their entire couch with samples from Room and Board! JK! You definately shouldn't abuse the system. Having said that, bipolarbear, I love your recycling idea. That's a great way not to waste... and find something to do with your samples.

considering flor's stance on recycling and reusing, i can't imagine they'd be offended by this diy project. It's not like someone is exploiting them and selling large quantities of these for a profit.

We used FLOR trimmings (about the size of their samples) as mousepads, so now we have two mousepads that match the carpet in our studio.

Flor actually encourages the use of samples in your home for smaller projects. they show them off in their Stories section of the website.

I ordered tiles today for a rug for my entryway. I have dogs. Most of my rugs end up getting trashed. Perhaps using FLOR, I can just replace 1 tile when it's messed up rather than buy another rug.

I also think it's going to look really great in my entryway which is fairly bright and cheery. I love the idea of a patchwork look with lots of prints and colors.

Thanks for sharing this idea!

Patrick woke up on the wrong side of the bed. No company(wait, can think of a few) would have any issue with you basically having an advertisement of a varied selection of their product at your front door for EVERY visitor to your home to see. Oh, better yet, the home owner then advocates the product adding personal promotion to the product. What's better, some dude you don't know on tv, or Bob from down the street?
